Sorry to hear that Jimmy Armfield has passed away after several years illness. As a boy he was one of my favourite players and always hoped he would join us. He was a cultured player, good tackler and good passers of the ball, not the stereotype clogger you usually saw at fallback. I loved to hear him on the radio his knowledge of the game and his sense of fair play always came across and I felt his love of the game came shining through. A great lost to the game.
 
One of ( if not the first) proper over lapping full backs in the game, a very good player who got injured just before the WC in 66 and missed out on winning a medal, ( Cohen taking his place).
 
I never knew him as a player or manager, I only knew him as a commentator - he was famous in our household for moaning about every player, every situation, every stand, every game, every coach, always moaning and criticising and saying it wasn't good enough.

He was an OK commentator, but his glass wasn't half full, it was about to be emptied and would have been full if it wasn't for those pesky kids...

I think you're getting him mixed up with Alan Green who he shared commentary with.
 
Measure of the man that, Bullet aside, I've not heard a single negative comment about him all day. Bottom line is everybody seems to think he was (and this is damning with faint praise I know) a really nice bloke, which is my impression as well. I could listen to him all day,the perfect antidote to Alan Green.
 
A voice from my childhood.
Growing up without a TV, I relied on Radio 5 for my football input and having Jimmy Armfield as the summariser of a game was like being in the presence of a wise avuncular relative who didn't lord his superior knowledge and experience over you but used it to enhance his clear passion for the game.
He just seemed like a top-rate human being, I almost felt I could hear the twinkle in his eye.
Having heard and read what his co-workers have to say about him, I am heartened that my impression has, if anything, undersold him.
Heaven is richer for having him there.

As I said, I think I was talking about Alan Green. Can't remember really, hard to remember without pictures / awareness what they looked like all those times I listened back in the 90s.
