The Stats Thread

There are two types of people in this world.

Those who understand statistics and those who say they're useless.

There are more then two points of view when it comes to stats mate, there are some who accept that stats do not always prove the point someone ( usually with a agenda) is trying to prove.

Unfortunately there are some who do not/can not accept that. The pity is there are a lot of that type about.

Those people wouldn't describe any stat as useless, they'd describe the application of the statistic as wrong.

There are still only two types.

It"s not often i agree with anything Stelling has to say but he is spot on about it being the most useless stat ever.
I wouldn't dismiss it so readily. It's far less useless than shots, shots on target, possession, corners won, etc. etc., which have been used for ages. Is it a perfect statistic? No, of course not. But it comes closer than any other to illustrate which team was most likely to win a match and it is a decent predictor over the long term of where a team will finish. To put it another way, if you're buying a stock, would you just look at the price movement in the last few days (due to sudden hype or whatever), or would you look at the company's fundamentals? Probably the latter. xG is something similar: it doesn't look at the results, but at the probability of a team winning based on the quality of the chances they create and concede. In the long run the team with the better quality chances will outperform the team that has fluked its way to wins over a short period of time (see Palace vs Burnley).

Those charts are pretty good, confirms what you see with your eyes -- Man Utd have been getting away with it and Liverpool need a new goalkeeper. City p1ssing it and we are still one of the top teams in the division.

Palace surprise me. Woy doing a good job there.
They were doing well before Woy. Just very unlucky. But if you're outperforming your opponents in xG game after game, your luck is bound to change.

Statistically speaking, that is. Because ultimately, we are all one, sharing the planet, drinking in the auras of those around us and understanding, deep in our everlasting souls that transcend these corporeal vessels we call bodies, that every one is every one else.

I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together...

I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus
Goo goo g'joob

Until today City were well on their way to bettering our record-breaking start to the 1960-61 season when we notched up 22 victories from our first 25 games. Following their defeat at Anfield this afternoon, City's record now only matches ours at this stage.

This is how City now compare after just 23 games:

Spurs 1960-61: Played 23 Won 20 Drew 2 Lost 1
City 2017/18: Played 23 Won 20 Drew 2 Lost 1

Of course others have managed to get through even a whole season without defeat but in every other instance their records by this stage have always included fewer wins and more draws. Preston famously went through the inaugural 1888/89 Football League season undefeated but their record from a total of 22 games played included four draws whilst Arsenal had drawn no less than 7 of their first 25 games in 2003/04 on their way to going through a whole season without defeat.

That 60-61 we went on to win another two more before losing our 26th game away to United at the end of January 1961, so in order for City to better our record-breaking total of triumphs of 22 out of 25 from the start of a season they will now need to win every one of their next three PL games.

Fingers crossed they'll now start dropping a few more points and our record will remain intact.:D

Couldn't care less. It's totally irrelevant.
So all records mean absolutely nothing, is that it?

Don't suppose you were around at the time but I was and it certainly meant everything to me at the time and still does. It was a fabulous season. we played amazing football much like City have done this season and I remain proud of what we achieved. The memory will stay with me until I die.

But each to their own I suppose.

The achievement and memory does not dissappear. But what city does or does not do is totally irrelevant. Records are there to be broken, and in the end it means nothing. If they win all the rest of their games, who cares! All that happens is that they win the league, and next season someone else might win it. It's not as if breaking a record will give you 10 points at the start of next season, so I'll stand by my point that it is irrelevant.

You cannot have it both ways. If what City achieve is irrelevant then so is for example what Harry achieves in beating the records of Shearer / Sheringham / most goals scored in 2017, whatever. Either a record stands for something or it doesn't.

Like I say, each to their own. I know if I was a City fan I'd be over the moon about what they've achieved, oil money or no.

But at the end of the day we'll all make our own minds up what matters to us eh ?:D

For me it's just statistics. I don't follow football for statistics. For me it's what happens on the pitch that is important. I enjoy watching good play and goals and other events on the pitch. The numbers put together afterwards are, well, just numbers. It doesn't exite me one bit. It's how it happens that is important.

I agree with all of that 100% except that for me statistics are merely what comes out of what you've been watching. They help you recognise what the club has achieved, take just pride in it and help you remember just how good the achievement was in later years when others come along and threaten to better it.

Saw a stat yesterday which showed that on goal difference alone over the last two seasons, we finished top. Both seasons. No justice in this game.

We achieved record 86 points in the league last season. With us on 44 points and with only 15 matches left to play, we will have to win all our remaining matches to overtake last season's total points. That looks like impossible to achieve as we have so many big matches coming up. We have simply lost too many points to bottom teams this season.

We have dropped a total of 25 point so far this season, but only four of those to teams currently below 11th in the table - just two more than to teams finishing below 11th last season.
