Tottenham await green light on multi-million pound 'player lodge'

Tottenham will learn early next year whether they will have the green light to build multi-million-pound player accommodation close to their training ground.

The ambitious scheme would see a 45-room “player lodge” constructed at Myddleton Farm, a stone’s throw from the site of their Enfield training base.

Standard Sport understands that as well as using the lodge to house their own players, Spurs would host other clubs and national teams preparing for games in London.

It is understood that, if the plans are approved, England could use the site before home fixtures, while Barcelona and AC Milan are thought to have expressed an interest in staying there when they prepare for European matches in London.

The planning application was submitted to Enfield Council on October 6 and Tottenham hope there will be a positive decision as early as February next year. Club staff then made a presentation to the council on November 4. There have been extensive consultations and Spurs are optimistic they will be given the thumbs-up.

The latest move is part of the club’s long-term project to provide an infrastructure comparable with those of the top clubs in Europe. Spurs’ new training ground, which was opened in 2012, is the envy of clubs across the continent.

The lodge would give the head coach the option of keeping his squad together in the build-up to home games, and would make it easier for medical staff to treat and monitor players.

By providing the best possible facilities, Spurs hope to have a better chance of doing better on the pitch. These proposed upgrades go hand in hand with plans to build a £400million, 56,000-seat stadium close to White Hart Lane.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino takes a close interest in every level of the club is keen on the accommodation plans. Standard Sport revealed last month that Pochettino wants the club to alter its recruitment strategy for younger players, focusing on promising foreign teenagers as well as local ones.

Clever - keep control of the environment before matches.

Wasn't there something about one team that brings their own pillows (or something along those lines) as the cost is so minimal compared to a poor night's sleep for a player?

That was Southampton

I think it's a combination of all 3:

- For our academy and visiting academy sides to use on a daily basis during the week
- For our first team to use before home weekend games
- To rent to England when there are matches at Wembley because St George's Park is, not very helpfully, in Burton

Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Daniel Levy has expressed his delight after plans for a players' lodge were approved last night.

The two-storey lodge, which will be built at Myddelton Farm, next to the Spurs training ground in Hotspur Way, Enfield, was given the green light by Enfield Borough Council planning committee last night.

The accommodation will be used for the first team, academy and possibly England players.

Mr Levy said: "The training centre is already considered to be one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world and this unique and high quality environment will allow us to further improve the care and attention our players receive.

"The club's first team and academy players are our most important assets and the long term future of the club rests on being able to deliver teams that is in peak mental and physical condition. Everything the club does, from the academy upwards, is geared to achieving success on the pitch and this facility will play an integral role in supporting that aim."

People living in the area had objected to the plans, which they claim “carve” away at green belt land.

The facility still needs approval from Mayor of London Boris Johnson before it can be built but the London Assembly has already shown its support for the proposals.

From what I read a while ago - apparently several international federations and foreign teams have had discussions with us about using our facilities while they are playing over in London. I think it would be something of a money spinner for the club (the income from this could perhaps pay for the upkeep of the whole training complex?) but probably more importantly it would give a lot of top players a first hand view of our facilities, which could potentially help with attracting players in the future.

Additionally if England were ever to win a World Cup or European Cup bid I would imagine that our facility would be very much in demand from any countries playing their group games in London.

They should make it a 100 room site, dig down if you wanted natural light put a moat around it, still only have the 45 room build above the horizon. I'm thinking 100 because of NFL where the numbers are a lot bigger.

Shouldn't that be "are" Mr Butters?

How many rooms would be needed for NFL, is 45 too few? Actually, are the rooms doubles? Footballers always use doubles and talk about their room mates. Or is that room-mates?

yes 45 would be too few if you are going to house both teams. Typically a game day squad has 46 players dressed. Then there are a ton of coaches, assistants and staff. probably looking at needing to house at least 100 poeple. So even if they double up then that is 50 rooms. then double that for the two teams.
