So I just downloaded Steam and puts some money in my wallet. I have no time for gaming these days but my nearly 9 year old son does. He is playing stuff from random websites and I find it hard to keep up. His cousins of a similar age are allowed to play violent games and he isn't. Naturally.

So I need some recommendations for some Single Player offline games that don't involve excessive violence. I am looking at the Indie games and a few others but I really do not have a clue.

Help?

So... come on then - what are all of your top 10 games of all time/any systems?

I can't remember which version so the following:

Destruction Derby
Resident Evil
Unchartered
Broken Sword
Pro Evo
Original Metal Gear Solid was amazing
Brian Lara Cricket
Champ Manager 98/99
The First Hitman
Mario Cart
Tiger Woods

kerbal space program is a ton of fun for a kid who likes to tinker and experiment... basically, you build rockets and can launch them to other planetary bodies.
the astronauts are kerbals, not even real people. doesn't matter if you crash them, you'll always have more.

I can't remember which version so the following:

Resident Evil
Broken Sword
Original Metal Gear Solid was amazing
Brian Lara Cricket
Champ Manager 98/99
The First Hitman
Tiger Woods
Tomb Raider
Gran Tourismo
The Getaway (if you drive in London a lot you can use your knowledge of shortcuts and traffic density to get around)

Have to agree with a lot of that - edits in-line.

Rogue Squadron (Gamecube).
GTA Vice City (PS2).
Mafia (PC).
Hidden & Dangerous 2 (PC).
Commandos 2 (PC).
Uncharted 2 (PS3).
Champ Mananager - whichever version of I used to play all night, could well be 98/99 (PC).
Rainbow 6 Rogue Spear (PC).
Chocks Away (A3000).
Fable 2 (X360).

10. Imogen (BBC Micro)
9. Sim City (CBM Amiga)
8. Skyrim (Sony Playstation 3)
7. Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (Sony Playstation 2)
6. Metal Gear Solid (Sony Playstation)
5. Modern Warfare (Sony Playstation 3)
4. Shadow of Memories (Sony Playstation 2)
3. Gran Turismo (Sony Playstation)
2. Kick Off 2 (CBM Amiga)
1. Tomb Raider (Sony Playstation)

Not all of the games would be classed as technically brilliant, but I have picked out the titles which I simply loved playing. Where a series of game exists (eg Tomb Raider), I've tried to pick out the single title which I enjoyed the most.

Wrote this a couple of years ago, would probably have to get Dishonored in there now.
Near misses: SWOS; Bust-A-Move; Holed Out; Timesplitters; Buzz; Quake (PS1); Elite; Snapper

In no particular order
  • Player Manager
  • Half-Life (up until the freaky space bit) - and it's mods (Counterstrike, Day of Defeat etc)
  • Homeworld
  • Tomb Raider
  • Dark Souls
  • ArmA 2 - DayZ mod
  • Skyrim
  • SWKOTOR
  • World of Warcraft
  • Mass Effect 2

That's what I meant! Respect due boss, such a great and underrated game. It certainly had flaws but no game is perfect and the good bits made it so addictive. The tactics designer is still the best on any football game and I used to import those onto Kick Off 2.

Get him minecraft. This will get your life back. Watch videos on youtube.. massive craze at the minute and the past year and unlikely to stop. Taken over Lego.

I echo Superhudd. My 11yr old daughter builds stuff on Minecraft that blows my mind! She plays the PS3 download version.

Planescape: Torment
Baldurs Gate 2
Pro evolution soccer 4
Far cry 3
Championship manager 99/00 (I think it was that one!)
Tony Hawks 2
Skyrim
GTA: Vice City
Final Fantasy 7
Timesplitters
Fallout

I'm probably forgetting a million others I played to death though...

Currently playing dragon age Inquisition - very good but not hooked me in the way skyrim or dragon age: origins did.
