The Stats Thread

A few theories which may or may not be utter garbage:

Traditionally we always play open, attacking football making us defensively more vulnerable. Knowing this our opponents set up to deploy the counter-attack, getting ten or eleven men behind the ball making it more difficult for us to find a way through, thus obliging us to shoot from range

Over the years we've had a succession of attacking forwards who specialise in long range strikes - Berbatov, Keane, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe, Bale, Siggy, Townsend (ahem), Kane, Eriksen.

It's a good while since we've had a predator like Lineker who specialises in snaffling chances inside the box

Pick the bones out of that lot.

Something for us to aim for in our remaining 3 matches :

- if we win all the 3 matches, that will be our most wins(22) in the Div.1/EPL since 1985(23) (current best : 1961(31wins)

- if we are unbeaten in the remaining 3 matches (or atleast in 1 of them), that will be our least no of defeats(4) in Div.1/EPL (current best : 1951(7) and 1961(7))

- if we score 4 more goals, we will achieve our most goals scored(69 goals) in Div.1/EPL since 1986(74 goals) (current best : 1961(115 goals))

- if we keep clean sheets in all 3 matches (or concede less than 7), that will be the least no of goals conceded(26) in any Div.1/EPL (current best : 1971(33 goals conceded)) (note : we conceded 44 goals in 1951 and 55 goals in 1961)

- if we get 9 more points for a total 78, that will be our best ever points total in a season (current best : 1985(77)) (note : it would be 1961(97 points) if it was 3 points for a win)

- if we keep our current goal difference(39), that will be our best goal difference since 1963(49)) (current best : 1961(60))

We badly need to win a trophy in the next 3 seasons (2017/2018/2019). If we fail to do so, it will be the first time since the 1940s, that we fail to win atleast 1 trophy in every decade since then. We have a proud record of having won a trophy in each of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. In fact, since winning our first trophy, the FA Cup in 1901, we have won trophies in every decade apart from the World War 1(1910s) and World War 2(1930s,1940s) period. ManU are the only other team to have won trophies in each of the decade since the 1940s.

So Alli has provided 7 assists to Kane alone, but has 6 total?

Edit: oh, it's 2016 only.

Really surprising that Anderton had 14 assists for us in 1995 and no other Spurs players has got more assists than that since then. Don't remember Anderton having such an impact for us ever ! Only remember him being always out injured until he got the nick name "sicknote". Hope Eriksen can get 2 more assists to overtake Anderton.

The memory does funny things.... Anderton was an excellent player for us. Yes he suffered injury problems but still played 299 games for us over 12 years. The problem was that our team were extremely reliant on Anderton for our creativity and then suffered in the periods where he was injured.

As you say his injury record is not as bad as some make out, always used to love watching Anderton playing and he was a top player.

Still speaks highly of the club although does openly admit we fudged his career up with how we kaimanged his injuries

I'm sure he averaged more games for us than Roy Keane did for united

Close enough.

Roy Keane: 12 seasons, 326 games for United.

Darren Anderton: 12 seasons, 299 games fos us.

Career total, Keane just about edges Anderton with 473 vs 471 senior games - although Anderton played one more season than Keane.

Anderton was one of my favourite players back in the 1990s, scored some great goals that Bale and Ginola would've been proud of!

Just that wretched run of injuries around '96-98 which garnered him that undeserved nickname.

Probably missed more games as well considering he played at clubs who did well in cups and in Europe on a regular basis.

Ehhh...Explain the maths there please!

Just realised we have 3 players in the top 10 for Premier League assists:

18 - Mesut Ozil
13 - Christian Eriksen
12 - Dusan Tadic
12 - Dimitry Payet
11 - David Silva
11 - James Milner
11 - Riyad Mahrez
10 - Kevin de Bruyne
9 - Dele Alli
9 - Erik Lamela

EPL top eight mini-league 2015-16

1. West Ham: 25 points (+8 GD)
2. Manchester United: 22 points (-3 GD)
3. Southampton: 21 points (+3 GD)
4. Leicester: 21 points (+2 GD)
5. Tottenham: 20 points (+8 GD)
6. Arsenal: 19 points (+1 GD)
7. Liverpool: 14 points (-4 GD)
8. Emirates Marketing Project: 7 points (-15 GD)

This is hardly surprising that West Ham is top of the mini-league between the top 8 as they have done well against the top teams this season.

In contrast, we have a poor record against the top 10 teams, getting just 26 out of 54 points and winning just 6 out of 18 matches. But we have done better against the bottom 10 teams, getting 44 out of 57 points and winning 13 out of 19 matches.

It is clear we have to improve our record against the big teams next season if we want to fight for league title again.

I had made that point at the start of the season in the Expectations thread: very important to beat the teams we're supposed to beat to finish with a chance at top 4. It's a good start and the results against the top teams should start getting better, assuming Poch toughens the players' mentality.
