The London Thread.

Really liked this thread on the old board so thought I'd revive it.

Share your favourite places in London here. If you're visiting London and need some ideas then ask away!

I think I shall pay a bit more attention to this thread this time and put the best suggestions in this first post.

I'll get the ball rolling then.

It's the chinese new year this week and to celebrate they're putting up a stage in Trafalgar Square on Saturday. Think there's a parade of sorts.

I will probably head down and see what's occuring.

Had a thread asking about best areas to live close to/around London (may be moving soon).

But, either way I'm usually there visiting, looking for good food choices (local stuff, not tourist brick)

Hopefully over time this thread will fill up with some more food choices.

In the mean time, I finally visited Aspers Casino last night and played a poker tournament. Casino Poker tourneys are well fun. Finished in the money but still would have been worth the ?ú25 entry if I'd lost. Their bar looked cool too, lovely view of the Olympic stadium. I wouldn't choose to drink around Stratford (correct me if I'm missing out on something good) but if I had to go for a drink in Stratford it would be in the casino or King Edward VIIpub nearby.

Tomorrow I'm trying Souk Medina for the first time. Anyone been? what would you suggest I have? I'm excited.

There's a good thread here with some cool suggestions of where to go out in Camden.

I love walking the canals. From near Portobello Road on to Little Venice, up through Regent's Park and the Zoo to Camden Lock, and on to Hackney. The houseboats, the birds (both avian and human), the change in neighborhoods - brilliant.

I cycle along the Lee quite often. Amazing how quickly it goes from countryside to industrial to residential to city.

Would you have any knowledge of canal/riverside pubs? nothing quite like supping some beer on a summer evening next to the river.

ON my last trip to London, went to the Courtald gallery amongst other things. Might not be everyones thing on here but it was fudging awesome. Free for students as well which helps. It had works by pretty much every impressionist artist I (with my limited knowlege) considered to be an important player. Lots of stuff around the area as well.

The Grand Union, which is at Great Western Road right near the Westbourne Park tube station, is a good pub and they have some tables and chairs canalside in good weather.

The Waterway in Maida Vale is a bit upscale but has a great outdoor deck right on the canal and is never too crowded.

There's also the Cafe Laville, which is on Edgware Road in Maida Vale just past Little Venice and is literally over the canal where it runs through a tunnel for a bit before popping up closer to Regent's Park. As the name suggests, it's a cafe and not a pub, but they do serve beer and it's bike friendly. They have an outdoor patio thing over the water.

Going a bit farther east, there's the Constitution in Camden, which is a proper old boozer with a great outdoor garden on the canal.

There are some pop-up places along the way that cater to cyclists in good weather, with coffees and beers and where you can fix a flat or lube your chain (!?).

Last on my list is Broadway Market in Hackney, where on one side of the canal there's a place called Lock 7, which is a little coffee shop/bike repair shop and north of the canal are a few good pubs, restaurants and shops, including F. Cooke, which is one of the few remaining old-school eel, pie and mash places in London and if I recall correctly, the proprietor is Spurs!

All best on a weekday when it's not so crowded, especially on a bike.

If your going to Broadway Market then I suggest you go for steak here http://www.buenayre.co.uk/index.htm one of the best steak places in London.

On the subject of stakes any good recommendations. I've been Gaucho which is lovely. Going to get the Hawksmoore book and go to one of his places soon as well.

Smithfields Bar & Grill is supposedly good (although that might not even be the name lol)

Wow. I just hope I remember this post when it starts getting warm! Thanks Dr Rosenrosen!

I like the Waterway. Iversen used to drink there a lot when I did.

They used to do a Tequila for about ?ú8, back when even an expensive drink was about ?ú4-?ú5 - tasted like brick.

Might go and see The Artist tomorrow night. ANyone got any cinema suggestions. Thinking Rich Mix or Genesis in Bethnal Green but haven't tried either before.

ok tomorrow my mate and I are going to play pub golf - over 18 pubs during the day - both are off on annual leave.

So im thinking Embankment - South Bank area.

Anyone knwo of other things to do? Im thinking Aquarium.

Pub wise there's quite a lot along borough high street. Start at Borough and walk up towards London Bridge. Will get you your first 5 or 6 pubs.

18's quite a lot for one day, I'm not sure there's too many pubs actually on the river though?

This type of annual leave is my favourite type of annual leave. There is no greater feeling than waking up on a Friday morning when all the mugs are going to work and you are having a fry up and waiting for the pubs to open.

Truly magical.
