If Bentaleb were to pick up the defensive side of his game, he Carrol and Mason in a 3 man midfield would be great. Pritchard, Kane and Townsend ahead of them would make for a nice home grown lineup

Going by that, would we say that Mason is not good at recognising and closing down the passing lanes, whilst Carroll is?

I think Mason is the real deal and we've got our first choice CM pairing now. It's up to Stambouli of course to challenge that. Bentaleb and Dembele will be cup players or come off the bench. Would be surprised to see Dembele here next season

Depends on how many total 90s they've played. I don't remember either playing much so it could be skewed by just one good or bad game.

I'm guessing that the appearances stat is "starts(sub appearances)". Then again, Carroll did have some appearances coming on higher up the pitch which will affect the stats.

Like most stats they do not always tell the full story, however ( imo) Carroll is a better player then Mason so maybe its right.
