iPhone 5 - to be announced today

SpursLodge

Nicola Berti
Hi everyone, just thought I'd let all the Apple fans know that the iPhone 5 is being announced today. \o/

So what's everyone hoping to see included and what would it take for you to move from your current phone to an iPhone 5?

My pet peeve is that it shouldn't be the iPhone 5. It's the 6th generation of it. iPhone, iPhone 3G, 3Gs, 4, 4s. It should just be iPhone like its iPad now.

Other than that...not really sure. I'm on an iPhone 4 so will probably buy the new one when I get back to Australia.

They let Aussies have phones now?

Whatever next?

One which doesn't delete my numbers!

19:40"Its pretty cool," says Cook, returning to the stage. Um, maybe... Apple boss is now wrapping up. So far, we have not had any major surprises. Could there be a kicker to this conference?

19:39Showing a new commercial for the iPods.

19:38iPod Shuffle 2GB will cost $49. iPod Nano 16GB will be priced at $149, and new iPod Touch will cost $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. New Nanos and Touches be available from next month.

19:37Jonny Ive says that the new Earpods have speakers specially positioned to better direct sound. They look a bit like the white alien robot in Pixar's Wall*E. The new Earpods are available as a standalone accessory to buy today. They will also come with the fifth gen iPod, seventh gen iPod Nano and the new iPhone 5. Presumably they will also come as standard with all iOS products in the future.

19:35Apple has shipped 600m headphones to date, but here we go, looks like a redesign coming. Yes, we have the Earpods! It is the same product that was leaked on a Vietnamese website earlier this month. They are designed to be more comfortable in the ear. Apple studied common volume of people's ears and then defined the shape of the Earpod to fit the majority of people.

19:32Bluetooth 4.0 confirmed, along with iOS 6. Can sync content from device onto a TV via Apple TV. And yes, Siri has been confirmed for the new iPod Touch! Also announced is five colours - red, blue, yellow, red, grey and black. Each one comes with their own specially coloured iPod Touch Loop.

19:30Back of the iPod Touch has a hidden button in the bottom left hand corner which is the iPod Touch Loop - a button that pops up and can be used to attach a wrist strap. Camera can take 1080p video and the front camera is 720p for HD FaceTime.

19:28Battery in new iPod Touch gives 40 hours of video playback. Product also comes with 5MP iSight camera with LED Flash. Sapphire Crystal lens cover, just as in the iPhone 5. Pictures look real pretty. Also has the Panorama feature announced earlier. Can also download iPhoto for the first time to edit photos.

19:26Clumsy Ninja showcased on the iPod Touch. Real-time simulation of a Ninja character. Can move the little guy around, or tickle him with a feather, causing him to hide badly behind a plant. Apparently you have to train Clumsy Ninja to be a better Ninja. Hold a punchbag up and train him to punch, or get him on the "ninja trampoline". Game launching before Christmas.

19:23Now onto new iPod Touch. Only 6.1mm thick, and weighs just 88 grams. Made out of anodised aluminum. And yes, it is fitted with the 4-inch Retina display that comes in the iPhone 5! More immersive video and game playing experience. (Game Centre apparently has 150m players). New iPod Touch comes with the A5 dual-core processor. Up to seven times faster graphics.

19:20Apple has sold over 350m iPods over the year, but "exciting changes" coming. First to the iPod Nano. The seventh-gen iPod Nano drops the current square format, and is now a rectangle size that is ultra thin. It looks at a bit like a tiny iPod Touch. It has a Home button and new Lightening connector. Comes in seven colours, including grey, black, red, purple, yellow, blue and green. Has a multi-touch display, integrated FM tuner, widescreen video(!) and pedometer with Nike+ tech. And yes, iPod Nano will have Bluetooth to stream music to Bluetooth speakers and accessories. New battery will give 30 hours of music playback apparently.

19:15New iTunes on Mac has simplified user interface, new mini-player, and re-designed iTunes Store. Will roll out in October. Ok, now onto the iPod range.

19:14Artist pages show the music available, but also information on concerts and so on.

19:13Now onto movies. iTunes in the Cloud will remember where you have been playing a movie, and then allow you to pick up the viewing straight from that point on another device. Showing a clip from Avengers Assemble featuring the Hulk.

19:11New options for creating playlists. Drag and drop functionality for moving albums and tracks over to the playlist sidebar. 'Up Next' flags up the what is coming next on a playlist. Great feature is the redesigned mini-player enabling you to control what is playing while doing something else on the Mac. Has play, pause, etc, but also search options. Looks good.

19:08Now onto iTunes on Mac and PC. There are now over 200m customers using iTunes in the Cloud, racking up more than 15bn downloads. New iTunes in the Cloud unveiled. Edge to edge design, with loads of images. Click on one, such as Adele's 21, and it becomes big in the centre of the page in a banner with options to play tracks. Can click on an artist and it shows all music by them, and also any images that they have shared.

19:05New iTunes Store announced. Has a more visually rich design, with bigger images showcasing content at the top. Facebook likes integrated into store, meaning you can like content and see if your friends like it too. Cue says store is completely redesigned, and will roll out with iOS 6 on September 19.

19:04iTunes boss Eddy Cue on stage to talk about iTunes 11. Says that iTunes Store is now available in 63 countries around the world. Adds that 66% of iTunes downloads now come from iOS devices.

19:02iPhone 5 will cost $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. The launch will mean that other iPhones come down in price, including the iPhone 4S now costing $99 for the 16GB model. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 start this Friday (Sep 14), and product will go on sale as expected on September 21 in various markets, including the UK. All compatible iOS devices will be able to upgrade to iOS 6 for free on September 19.

18:59Ive says iPhone 5 "feels" different in your hand. Apple has never build a product with this level of machining and production. Body cut with crystalline diamonds. Back is lightly textured and has different colour bands at each end.

18:56LTE and wireless uses single combined chip, which is why iPhone is thinner, says Apple video. A6 chip is so efficient that it increases performance while using less battery life - thankfully. Video confirms that new Lightening connector can be used either way, so you no longer need to have it the right way up to charge. Could be a game-changer for drunken efforts to charge phone.

18:53White and Black iPhone 5 confirmed. No word on NFC chip, but phone has A6 chip, iSight camera, new smaller Lightening dock connector, iOS 6 and larger screen. Apple designer Sir Jonny Ive is now in video talking up the iPhone 5. Says smartphone has been completely redesigned, and is 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S.

18:51FaceTime will be available over cellular networks as well as WiFi. Forstall rounds off by saying that there are over 200 new features in iOS 6, and you are going to "love it", apparently.

18:50Facebook has been integrated into Siri. This means that you can use your voice to post Facebook updates. Just don't leave it on by accident.

18:49Now enhancements to the much loved Siri. Can ask for sports scores and standings, such as "What are the current NFL standings?" Siri will then bring up the results and tables. You can now launch apps with Siri. Siri has also apparently "learned a lot more about movies", so they assistant will bring up some options when asked. It can also find restaurants and suggest places that are open for reservations.

18:47Now onto new Passbook, which is a new feature that places your tickets, vouchers and store cars in once place. Has a really cool 'shredder' option for deleting old tickets and so on. Can use Passbook to check in your boarding pass at the airport.

18:45Showing Safari browser in landscape on 4-inch screen, looks pretty decent, although not exactly revolutionary. iCloud Taps, can set bookmarks for web pages, Safari then takes your straight to page. VIPs is a system of flags that allows the user to flag up people as important so all their emails go to a certain folder.

18:43Forstall showing off Maps, which will replace Google Maps as the re-loaded service in iOS devices. Says it will flag up over 100m points of interest worldwide. Partnership with Yelp for info. Also there is turn-by-turn navigation. Siri gives direction as the map shows routes, with some nice 3D maps and satellite imagery. 3D flyover is pretty amazing, can scroll around major landmarks. Forstall shows Big Ben in London. Can move the camera angle and give yourself a "virtual tour".

18:40Smaller connector confirmed. It is called Lightening. It is the same one that was leaked by a French blog last week. Has eight exposed pins and the ninth being the metal surrounding. Apple has agreed deals with a number of kit makers, such as Bowers and Wilkes, to make accessories that will fit with the new connector, but it has also announce an adaptor to ensure older accessories still run. iOS chief Scott Forstall on stage to discuss iOS 6.

18:36The camera can take 1080p HD video as with iPhone 4S, but video stabilisation has improved and face detection for up to 10 faces. Front-facing camera has been updated to 720p for those HD FaceTime conversations where you notice other people's wrinkles. There are three mics on iPhone 5, and the speaker has been improved for better audio response.

18:33Shared photo streams will be on iPhone 5 using iCoud, means people can share images and have others comment on them. Panorama photos feature allows people to take big panorama images by sweeping the camera across. Shows a panorama picture of Golden Gate Bridge taken on iPhone 5 that is 28 megapixels. Looks amazing, incredibly detailed.

18:32Camera - same 8MB sensor as in iPhone 4S, but 25% smaller with various new features, including a dynamic low light mode, precision lens alignment for better focusing and sapphire crystal lens cover, very hard and protects lens while making photos shaper. Image tech included in A6 processor - spatial noise reduction, smart filter for colour, better low light performance and faster photo capture (40% faster than iPhone 4S). Schiller says iPhone 5 camera will make "kids look happier" in photos.

18:29Important one here - battery life. Schiller says battery will give eight hours of talk time and 3G browsing, 8 hours of LTE Browsing, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music playback.

18:28Real Racing 3 coming to the app store later this year.

18:27Murray introduces Real Racing 3, featuring a Porsche racing around a track. Graphics do look amazing. reflections on the cars door panels, can see reflections in the rear view mirrors and sun glare. Game will feature timeshifted multiplayer, meaning that someone races against a ghost time set by someone in another session.

18:25Now onto power, iPhone 5 will come with the new A6 chip. Two times faster CPU. Schiller says that this will give faster performance across the board. State of the art graphics. EA executive produce Rob Murray comes on stage.

18:23Ultrafast wireless technology is next. GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA+ and yes, Long Term Evolution, enabling superfast broadband speeds on the smartphone. Boom for the third time! iPhone 4G is definitely coming to Everything Everywhere's EE network this year.

18:20Apple apps such as iWork suite and iPhoto have all been optimised for new larger screen, including portrait and widescreen. The screen does look mighty impressive. Now showing CNN app on bigger screen, with more areas to display stories, and OpenTable restaurant booking app, with more recommendations displayed. Display has 44% more colour saturation that iPhone 4S. Full SRGB specification. Schiller confirms that display uses in-cell integrating the touch layer in the LCD. Means the phone can be thinner.

18:17As expected, the iPhone 5 has Retina display boasting 326 pixels per inch. Boom again! The four-inch screen is confirmed, up from 3.5-inches in previous iPhones. Schiller says that it has 1136x640 pixels.

18:16iPhone 5 is the "thinnest smartphone in the world", at 7.6mm in depth. Weighs 112 grams, 20% less than the iPhone 4S.

18:15Phone rises on plinth in centre of the stage. Right, it looks much taller as expected. Made entirely of glass and aluminium. Schiller says its production was Apple's biggest challenge ever.

Hi everyone, just thought I'd let all the Apple fans know that the iPhone 5 is being announced today. \o/

So what's everyone hoping to see included and what would it take for you to move from your current phone to an iPhone 5?

A bigger screen would be cool.

This one is more of a criticism of Apple not the iPhone, but for fudge sake, make some better earbuds!!!

In the US its $199 for 16gb, $299 for 32gb and $399 for 64gb

So no doubt in the UK itll be £299, £459 and £599 or something ridiculous, rip off UK as always

Typical fan boys. Will never, ever dare consider another company, and just feel the need to constantly pay over the odds for products that really aren't that amazing.

You pay for what you get. I would happily switch to another company if I was convinced that it was better. But I'm not convinced that Samsung/HTC are better despite what people who have those phones tell me.

Why's that? Because they haven't got an Apple sign on the back?
