Whether our forwards would be more inclined to run the channels if they saw a CMF with Moutinho’s passing range on the ball than Winks is another question though...

I wouldn't have even minded if that player had been b2b. Just players with the mindset to play into space.

the teams that those players play for have solid defences and attacking full backs

we’re lacking both which give you a platform to play off

Deserves to sit on the bench for a while. Doesn't do enough for me...

    How did I miss this
This shows that he passes the ball forwards
And look where the players are receiving the ball... sideways, sideways and more sideways
That’s a huge part of the issue .... we have a system where we expect our wide player to create like pool do but actually their quite brick at it

Winks has technical ability, not the question. What he lacks for me is two things

    - Natural aggression (not in an treasure cave sort of way, just first instinct to get forward)
    - IMO, he doesn't force the front players to make runs (I'll explain this)

Lots of folks ask why don't Son, Dele, Lucas, etc. make runs with Winks vs. Eriksen or N'dombele, chicken or egg?

The early game in the season where Eriksen was on the bench and made the instant impact coming on highlighted this (sorry can't remember which side). The front line had made very few runs, Eriksen came on and everyone starting making runs. People could say the front line wasn't making the runs for Winks to pass to prior.

I think that's the point, Eriksen, N'dombele and Lamela will make passes to where you are supposed to be, always. The players know this and make the run. Winks I think wants to confirm you made the run before he passes (most times), so it creates a sort of cycle. Again if you go back to that Eriksen sub performance (yes, one of the few good ones this season), he was spraying it around and pointing to where he wanted runs.

Winks is a likeable lad with a good talent level but with a fit N'dombele, Lo Celso and Lamela in the side (plus the fact he's never been able to play Sissoko's role), I can't see him being much more than a bench option.

What about the games this season and last where we didn't play well at all with Eriksen on the pitch? Why weren't the runs/passes made then? I think there were more factors in the Villa game, though Eriksen was very good and better than Winks.

I think comparisons to Eriksen are a bit unfair as they play different roles most of the time. Year, Winks couldn't do some of the stuff Eriksen does, none of our players can with the frequency he does when on form. Eriksen likewise couldn't do the defensive stuff Winks does.

Winks has shown that he can pass effectively, quickly. The competition has been upped massively by Ndombele (time will tell with Lo Celso), so he needs to show more and be more consistent if he wants to start regularly. If an in form Eriksen is the point of comparison for passing for our central midfielders everyone falls short and Winks comes out better than most.

Sorry for cutting the rest of your post but the bolded is what i wanted to focus on, I think you make a good point and one i can not really disagree with. However he is still really learning the game ( i know he is 23) but he has only played 70 times in the Prem and a lot of them were as a sub ( if i remember rightly).

    Mate, this isn't a Eriksen/Winks comparison

    - It is a point about how the players in front of Winks do not seem to make as many runs as they sometimes do in the same match with a different passer behind them.

And again, I have specifically said Winks has the technical ability.

    - To you and @parklane1 it's up to Winks, he has to be more aggressive, hit the pass, if no one makes the run, call them out on it. Make them know the pass is coming so they better fudging make the run.

I'm not sure players can truly change their nature, he just seems a touch too passive (a better Tom Carroll), I just think his time is running out to make it at Spurs (if we add anyone else to midfield and Lo Celso is fit?)

I'm surprised no one has even posted on here. Turd again. Doesn't do anything in a game really. Just runs around like a jack Russell aimlessly, passes sideways and gives the ball away an awful lot. But yes let's continue to start him.

He's not playing well at the moment, but we've seen top performances from him before - Real away in the CL for example. Like Dele, he needs to be taken out of the team given his form. Play Sissoko and Ndombele in CM, and then Son, Lamela and Moura behind Kane. Winks, Dele and Lo Celso can be used from the bench for now

We have to be careful here. He, like several other players, look to be short of confidence atm. He has played far better than he has shown in recent games. In previous seasons he would have held onto the ball better under pressure, played more key passes and supported the attack better. The Munich game in particular has crushed him imo.

We shouldn't give up on him but he is not an automatic starter at the moment.

So let's get him out of the team for a while. Let him feel his way back in with some sub appearances in games that are already in the bag (although I appreciate there aren't likely to be many of those at the moment)

I agree. But it's not a position we are overly blessed with talent atm. We really are missing Mousa Dembele. He just breathed confidence into his team mates. Too many spurs fans didn't appreciate the guy and he was tainted by injury at the end.

NDomble and Sissoko as the two is as good as we've got for now so I think that should be our pairing.

I've been a Winks critic in the past, but if I was the guy I'd really have to fudging ask how I was first off yesterday?

To me Dele, Eriksen, Rose would have been off before Winks (especially when we were ahead).
