Changing Career

Spursman

Neil Ruddock
Has anyone ever changed career from sales into something else?

I've been selling all my life and it would be great to get into IT but don't know what part of IT I enjoy. I also don't know if I would be able to take the financial hit and start at the bottom somewhere.

so has anyone successfully got out of sales and done something else?

Does your current role offer you training possibilities?

A good segue into IT, or anything else, is project management or business analysis type roles, things that being a good communicator is a particularly useful skill for.

Ive never worked sales, but something like the above is, IMO, achievable for anyone with common sense and a critical mind - and would get you into IT based projects and analysis. From where you can get a flavour for what you might like.

Think of it as an interim step in a move.

I’d recommend specialising if you move to IT, the market is saturated and wages are dropping, particularly in London.

I’ll echo the above about starting at the bottom, I’d like to get out of IT but I can’t afford the drop at the minute.

Lastly, with Brexit uncertainty I’d be wary of moving, particularly if you have a decent benefits package and potential redundancy pay off.

Thanks, something to think about for sure. What would you suggest is good to get into IT wise now? cybersecurity is big at the moment isnt it?

A lot depends on your skills.

"Data Science" and "Machine learning" are the current buzz words around my area at the moment.

Generally I find infrastructure and ETL work are always in demand - and surprisingly few people know how to do it well.
