West Ham confirm failed Torres bid

    February 21, 2012

    By ESPNsoccernet staff

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has revealed the Championship club made moves to sign Fernando Torres from Chelsea and Carlos Tevez from Manchester City during the January transfer window.
[IMG]PA PhotosFernando Torres has failed to fire since joining Chelsea last January

Torres, a ?รบ50 million signing from Liverpool, has struggled to regain top form again this season, scoring just four goals during the current campaign.
After recently returning from Argentina, Tevez could still feature for Manchester City after a high-profile falling out with manager Roberto Mancini as a result of his refusing to warm-up in a Champions League clash in Munich last year.
Sullivan, though, says neither Chelsea or City were willing to negotiate terms for the out-of-favour strikers.
"We tried to get Torres from Chelsea," Sullivan told West Ham Till I Die. "Well if he couldn't score in the Premier League, come along with us for a month. We might fire him up. They just said 'not at this moment in time'.
"Three times we asked [about signing Tevez]. Three times they said 'no chance'."

Sullivan's co-owner David Gold later confirmed the Hammers were seeking to sign Torres on a "short-term loan".

(although to be fair, Championship is about Torres' level)

I hate West Ham with a passion. They are rivals.

There is a misconception that if a team is miles better, they cant be a rival. True arsenal fans always saw us as their enemy number 1, even when they were finishing 40pts ahead of us.....it was only the glory hunters that would say it was Man U.

West Ham are a local rival, and they derby against them is a fierce one, full of hate.

This. Pikey fudgers that aren't on our level, but I love beating them. When they manage to stay in the same division as us, of course :D

Look at the history of the two clubs totman, doesn't even compare. They claim Arsenal aren't their rivals because they are too far out of their reach, if thats the case then surely we are too. Were closer to Arsenal in terms of trophies, history and current form than West Ham are to us. If anything, West Ham should look at a team like Fulham if they want another rivarly apart from Millwall.

Of course I'm a rivals. I look forward to games against those clams almost as much as Chelsea or the Goons! Ask any proper West Ham supporter who they look forward to playing after Millwall - and it would be us without a shadow of a doubt.

Can't wait for them to come back up next season, I really miss the rivalry - too many stale games in the league nowadays.

It just annoys me that they see US as a big rival to them, but they don't feel the same about Arsenal who are actually closer to them proximity wise.

I don't really understand that. City were telling the Spammers 'no chance' ? I thought Tevez was for sale ?

    I hate the pikey clams.

Never liked them before, but the game last season when we had a minute silence for the victims of the Japanese tsunami, they turn people saying 'shh' into 'sss' for a minute. Having arrived from Japan that morning and been there for the earthquake, that riled me. :x

Edit: not to mention the fact that they still do the gas chamber garbage.

Perhaps they only offered a loan deal whereas City were only willing to sell for good

It's not about how close you are in terms of trophies - rivalries are much more complex than that. We have a long-standing rivalry with West Ham which Arsenal simply don't have. There are large parts of East London and Essex where the two most popular teams are Tottenham and West Ham.

I very much consider them to be our rivals, albeit much lesser rivals than Arsenal.

    LOL at the article. Muppets.

It's that whole appease the fans crap they have going on. There was zero chance of Tevez or Torres going there but the dildo brothers still act like they are billy big gonads, when in fact they have small testicles.

Are they bidding for rent of the OS? I'd say they are seething inside at the (potential) money they lost on that whole debacle.

I'm a not rivals, a rival is someone who can challenge you for something. They can't challenge us for brick. I hate their fans, and their current owners, so I always want to smash them up, but they're not rivals.

I consider West Ham rivals but only because they hate us so much. I'm from North London and whilst I've known a few West Ham fans over the years I've never known as many of them as I have Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd or Liverpool fans. They've also rarely challenged us for anything in particular (though they have finished above us as recently as 2008). I can't remember the last time we had a reason to be jealous of them about anything either. If it weren't for the hatred on their side, I'd think of them like Fulham or QPR, just another club that happens to be from London.

But the fact is, they do hate us. And if you've ever been to a Spurs-West Ham game, you'll see the atmosphere and the level of banter between the fans is something special. I love it. So yes, for that reason, I do consider West Ham as rivals, although they come way behind Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd in the hatred league for me.

Even when they are in the same league as us, the importance of the fixture doesn't even come close to Arsenal or Chelsea. I'd even argue United at home is bigger. The games means much more to them than they do to us.
