Barack Obama good president or not?

Given that the republicans have the majority in both houses, I think he accomplished a lot. The economy was doing just fine. The effects of the current regime won't really be seen until the democrats are back in charge. Guess who will get blamed then.

That was not the question though.

Talk about people on their own merit and Obama was not the man he was painted as.
I was engaging in whataboutism . That's all the rage.

To be honest I don't know a whole lot about Obama's policies (except that Trump is trying to roll them back one by one) but was he not credited with turning the economy around after Bush?

The Republicans purposely voted no to many bills Obama tried to get passed, even if they were actually in favor of the bill, just to make him look like he didn't accomplish anything.

Good presidents get by in such conditions by negotiating.

Had Obama been more focused on the day to day and less so on his legacy and the history books, he probably could have achieved some good things.

Could he no force bills through though like Trump has?

He massively upped the number of executive orders compared to previous presidents, but wasted his early years when he had the chance to force things through on legacy stuff like Obamacare.

Trump has followed suit on EOs and increased even from that high level.

very difficult to judge what Barry's legacy will be, he inherited an economy on the verge of collapse, labour participation went down to its lowest levels under him, amount of people on for stamps doubled and there was a plethora of mass shootings under his watch, I guess he gets credit for taking down Bin Laden and at least he acted presidential and wasn't tied to his twitter feed.

You are blaming him for the mass shootings?

Not his fault, but it is indicative of the "state of the nation".

Unfortunately his election wasn't the end of the racism as was hoped, it just emphasised to divide. Just as many were happy to celebrate the first black president, there was backlash that could be exploited by Trump. Perhaps, with perspective of time, the backlash will be seen as the last deaththrow, although it's far from clear now. It's impossible to look at Obama's presidency as anything but a disappointment, the failure of hope, but a lot of that was forces beyond his control.

His legacy seems to be that of Trump and the republicans trying to undo everything he did. Couldn't have been too shabby then.

That's a direct result of doing everything by Executive Order rather than compromising and winning over Congress (or rushing it through in the first 6 months instead of arguing with his own team over Obamacare).

All politicians are doomed to failure, few ever manage to unite their countries and as others have said modern leaders focus on their "legacy" rather than improving the lot of their citizens.
