Are we really a one man team?

Are Spurs really Bale + 10 others?

  • Undoubtedly - without Bale we would be mid table at best

here's a similar stat, if you took all of De Gea's saves away from United they would be bottom with a minus 342 goal difference

H'mm. We all agreed Arsehole were a one man team with Van Persie last year. Becoming harder to deny Bale's currently making the same sort of difference for us right now.

he's certainly the key player at the minute but every team has a character like that, take Aguero away from City last season and they don't win the league, take Drogba out of Chelsea and they go out in the CL group stage, take Keane out of 99 United and they don't win anything, let alone the treble

having a player like that is a strength not a weakness, its a bit disingenuous to use that as a criticism

To be fair, we said the same about Arsenal last year re van Rapist. And if Bale played for them we'd be saying the same again so I can understand why people think we are a one man team.

Those fudging stats annoy me though. Last year they were flying around about van Persie. "Without van Persie's goals Arsenal would be 20 points worse off" or whatever. This season, they don't have him and they may be worse off but not by the amount of points van Persie supposedly won. And how come no one is doing the stat that says "If Adebayor scored as many goals this season as he did last season, Spurs would be 2nd" or whatever.

If Bale left, we'd undoubtedly be weakened. However, it's impossible to say to what extent. Maybe Adebayor would start playing like he can, maybe a new signing would. It's all speculation and the stats are put together purely for headlines and scaremongering.

I agree - thats why I laughed at people talking about Arse being a one man team - if it made people feel better then fine but it was pathetic. Why buy good players if they arent gonna make a difference? haha

There is no such thing as a one man team. Can Bale save? Does Bale defend? noooooooooooooo

Too right. If Lloris doesn't make that save last night, we are dead and buried. He is absolute class along wtith Bale. Best keeper I recall seeing at Spurs in thirty years supporting the club (apologies to Erik the Viking but it's true). I really fear that a big club might come looking for him.

Gylfie scored a vitally important goal last night. That seems to be getting lost in the mix.

Looking at the stats earlier, Defoe has scored something like 10 goals and had 5 assists. That's not a million miles away from Bale. Yet Defoe has been hit and miss this season - certainly not outstanding.

We are not a one-man team. We are a very, very good side with an excellent manager and an exceptional player.

Sigurðsson's scrambled equaliser last night notwithstanding, I do think it's about time one or two other players contributed occasionally to the scoreline.

Tottenham forward Gareth Bale isn't carrying his Spurs team-mates, they help lift him to greatness
Gareth Bale is the shining jewel of the Premier League and driving Tottenham Hotspur towards a top four place in what appears a personal crusade.

So many times this season Bale has inspired Spurs towards three points with a magical swing of his left boot and his price tag is now conservatively estimated at £60 million.
He is the man of the moment, a player admired by all the glamour clubs in Europe and securing Champions League football next season is surely the only way Spurs will manage to keep him.
But the question of whether Tottenham are a one-man team is disrespectful to the other players and one that Andre Villas-Boas' dressing room would certainly take umbrage with.
It would be churlish to try and downplay Bale's achievements in any way this season, such is his vast influence to the team but he would not have the time and space to weave wonders without his supporting cast.
Eric Cantona once famously dismissed Didier Deschamps as a "water carrier", the implication being that the midfielder did all the dirty work to enable him to perform miracles with a football.
And while the likes of Scott Parker and Lewis Holtby's qualities are without question, they perform the similar role that allows Bale such freedom to wreak havoc on the Premier League.
The performances of Moussa Dembele cannot be ignored either, for he has provided crucial protection for Bale in the absence of the injured Sandro.
Villas-Boas also deserves credit for constructing a game plan that allows Bale the platform and free role to terrorise at will.
The Wales international's magnificent winner against West Ham on Monday night lifted Spurs up into third and Bale is now being mentioned in the same company as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Real Madrid are expected to chance their arm with a bid this summer whatever the outcome of Spurs's top four hopes though chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator and the prospects of a transfer will be like pushing water uphill.
Levy certainly has Bale to thank, for the midfielder's recent performances have eased the scrutiny on the Spurs boardroom.
The pressure on Bale to score more goals only increased after Levy's failure to sign Internacional striker Leandro Damiao in January, with Jermain Defoe's injury at West Brom earlier this month only serving to illustrate how badly stocked they are with forwards.
Emmanuel Adebayor is arguably the only specialist striker on the books and less said about his input at Upton Park the better. But when Villas-Boas has a player with the brilliance of Bale any potential problem can be overcome.
It could have all been so different, too. Three years ago Bale was targeted by Nottingham Forest in an audacious attempt to take him on loan, with Harry Redknapp apparently quite happy to let him go.
Bale was not prepared to drop down to the Championship, though, and the move was aborted. Alex McLeish, then at Birmingham City, also considered a £3 million bid for Bale as Redknapp initially struggled to know what to do with him.
Now, however, Bale has emerged as the most outstanding player in the land of cash and controversy and is odds on to win the Player of the Year award. But just don't call Spurs a one-man team.

One man team no way. Bale barely contributes defensively and considering our relatively low scoring rate our defense is keeping us on pace.

It would possibly be a fiar comment to say we are a bit of a one man attack. Ade, Lennon and Dempsey his main attacking comrades have been contributing very little in recent matches and we do need more from the other attacking options.

As a matter of interest, Theo Walcott has a higher percentage of Arsenal's Premier League goals and assists this season than Gareth Bale has for Spurs.

Yes, but despite being their top goal scorer, if you take away his goals, doesn't that only reduce their points total by one? (I'm not sure if he's scored any winners since I last checked that one, well "drawers" at least.)

I suppose that's what all clubs want? Top scorers that are not influential and that won't win you points?

Watch the games again, he won a lot of headers against the rugby team in defensive positions (set pieces, etc.). He helps out when we are under pressure, if we have most of the possession, he plays primarily attacking.

The one man team theory is garbage when applied to top tier teams, the set ups tend lend to supporting the best players, but the teams themselves are still quite strong.

It is more applicable for lower level teams where a single (especially goal scoring) player can be the main difference. I'd argue Swansea is more dependent on Michu than we are on Bale in terms of overall results.

We're not a one man team but its always dangerous when one play stands out head and shoulders ahead of everyone else in your squad, more often than not they end up becoming unsettled and you have to sell

We need some other players to step up too, its a shame we lost so much quality in the sales of VdV and Modric.....I believe this would have been offset had the Mouthino signing actually gone through at the end of the summer window

The best thing we could do in my eyes is sign a star striker, someone who will bang goals in and take some of the focus off Bale (only problem with that is without creativity and service even the most lethal of strikers would struggle for goals)

Where do people think this team would finish in the league without Bale? We would obviously be significantly weaker and a bit more predictable but I still think that we'd challenge for a top four place.
