Time to remove Lineker from the Hall of Fame?

I don't agree. Sven might've had some better players, debatable, but Venables team had a better balance.

Interesting. Venables team had maybe a better left-sided operator in McManaman and a midfielder in Gazza who could actually do what playmakers are expected to.
However, Sven's team was more battle-hardened and had better defenders: it's hard to know how well Venables team would have done if they were not playing on home soil. You have to remember that they only won two games out of five in 90 mins.

I'd say the Euro 96 team would be better, but I think a better comparison would be the teams that started either Euro 2004 or World Cup 2006...

I've just posted the 06 team. I think that you're into the good players, poor balance period then.

Yeah, the shoehorning of Lampard and Gerrard, just because, was crippling.
I think a more systems oriented manager would have got more out of that team, especially if they'd bean able to keep Scholes interested. Oh for 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 then eh...

Joe Cole on the left never really worked either.

Wasn't 06 the tournament Rooney was selected but was coming back from injury and Walcott was picked without ever playing in the PL?

Yes it was ( and the other forward was a giraffe) and Beckham just coming back from injury as well. That was the end of my love affair with my support for England. Golden Generation was a joke.

It was just weak management IMO. It would never happen, but had we got Jose in charge in 2006 then England would have had another trophy, it may not have been pretty, but we’d have one.

Good players but a badly balanced team. Everyone wanted to be a star and not enough water carriers to create a base to build from.

ah, euro 96, great time in my life, just finished Uni, young, free and single, none of the middle age stresses I have now, should have won that tournament, that slide from gazza, one kebab too many.....
