One player from history - 2019/20 edition

If you could pick one player from our history for current team who would it be?

The options are exciting.

Given his ability to scorer 15+ goals a season, I'd be tempted to play him in behind Kane with the caveat that he would drop off and drift around/across/rotate with the front three.

Probably the best use of his talent, and one which would allow Kane, Son, Lo Celso and Alli to play, would be as one of the two deeper midfielders, so alongside an anchor such as Dier. It does leave Ndombele out in big games, but I think providing the defensive positions are solid and improved, we could absolutely get away with two ball-playing attack-minded CMs.

You could also play him on the right side of a three, with (say) Dier and Lamela or Lo Celso, leaving a front three of Son Kane and Alli, with Sessegnon and Foyth as FBs. Admittedly you'd want to make sure your CBs were rock solid, but let's be honest, if that side got ticking they'd be exciting to watch. Looking at this, I think options 1 and 3 work best. Anything to get that vision, sublime passing and goalscoring into our side. This is quite possibly the only reason I am not a manager BTW!!!!!

I think that's where you'd play him, but like with Gazza, is that addressing the big gap in the team?

edgar davids can plug the hole in the midfield and punch out anyone who won't sign a contract or track back. its the only choice

My memory only goes back to the early '90s. In that time, I would say Ledley, Modric or Bale. But then, we have (in theory at least) decent strength at CB so Modric (to bolster CM) or Bale (to give us impact).

Going back further though, I can't help but agree with Hoddle (and also agree that Gazza wouldn't fit into today's game)...but would Mackay be a better fit given that we need steel in midfield? With Ndombele alongside him and Lo Celso just in front, I think we'd be both hard to beat and creative.

EDIT: Or what about Danny Blanchflower or Edgar Davids for some real leadership?

A great question.

Realistically yes and no. His creativity would instantly produce an extra 20 goals a season for us IMO, but I suppose being brutally honest, the player we need right now is Luka Modric (as someone else mentioned above)...

Depends on if you want one of our better players or a player specific to this side's problems

- A prime Ledley alongside Sanchez would make a huge impact
- Bale alongside Kane and Son would make us truly fudging scary offensively.
- A prime Sandro, Dembele, Wanyama would cover a lot of the frailties in the middle of the park

Some of the suggestions re Gazza, Hoddle are a little odd for me, as the last thing we need right now is an inconsistent flair player (as much fun as it would be on the good days). That said (just to counter my own point) my personal favorite would be having VDV back ..

The question is around improving the team and improving on weaknesses

Hoddle and Gazza “inconsistent flair players”?!! Oh my word.

I watched Hoddle over 200 times easily for us. Inconsistent is not the word to use. Next you’ll tell me he was a “softie”!!!!!

Anyway, personally speaking, the reason I think we need Hoddle (hypothetically hahahaha not the BT model of today) is that our side was built to click off the meter of passing from Eriksen. With Eriksen not doing it, our forwards are struggling. Trust me, Glenn would give Kane 15 more goals a season minimum and others too. Mark Falco, a fine striker, underrated but not Harry Kane, could explain better than me. So IMO, the way I watch this club, he would be the difference maker right now.

I mean look, we’d all love Robbo but he’d be off in 30 mins.

Good shout re:Ledders BTW, agree 100% but only if 100%. Milo, can we expand to two?

I'd take Luka Modric or Bale in their prime all day long. :D (hah, just checked, and I answered the exact same thing last time out :p)

FWIW I am a terrible proof-reader. I have always relied upon noting it as a specific skill which is not among my best, however the modern game insists that creative midfield geniuses must also be able to cover space and do the dirty work, so time to up my game!!!!

I think Modric. He’s the equivalent of oil and just makes the other parts work better.
When Jan and Toby both leave it would be Ledley as the deficiency at cb will be larger than Cm based on what I’ve seen of NDembele so far
