I think he is just wishing them well. He seemed to absolutely love it there, and really wants success for them.
I seem to recall he offered his resignation when they went down, but they all agreed it best he stay on and keep things stable - and then help identify a replacement.
Really seems to have been a very genuine, and complimentary, relationship between manager and club/board.
