Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I don't see how not wanting another 10-20 years of neo liberalism having seen what it leads to makes you a populist. There seems to be a train of thought that anyone wanting anything slightly different from the status quo is suddenly a populist. I look at the lib dems for example and what are they really offering other than more of the same.

That's because more of the same works really well.

And isn't the phrase "neo-liberalism" what the echo on the inside of a tinfoil hat sounds like?

When you made the grand announcement a year or so back that "Corbyn has some good ideas and I will be voting for him" I had a little chuckle and smiled to myself, thinking, that's never going to happen. And it didn't. I have an ideology, that I'm committed to, not a political party. I don't belong to Labour anymore but am still a democratic socialist.

Well I have voted Labour in the past. If we were out of the EU i would happily vote for them as the part nearest to my views on what I feel the UK should be.

I turned a blind eye to all the hating on Jews thing(in part because I hate them, but I hate all religions) but I can not overlook the flip flopping on the EU.

How would you feel about a Tory Brexit? The Singapour model - look to attract corporations with low taxes, and fewer worker and environmental rights? Never mind that the UK is nothing like Singapour. We're a completely different economy and location - not next door to China, don't have lots of cheap labour, are an advanced economy etc etc. Forget that this vision is likely pie in the sky, would you be happy with the approach?

Or is it Brexit at any cost? Has it become so ingrained like supporting a football team that the realities or implications just don't matter. Your team must win?

I would be happy with any model that meant we did not have to pay a fee to be part of a trading block bar a small admin fee for stamps, envelopes and the like.

I would be happy with any model that meant we were free to sign an agreement with other countries, and for any laws we create to be debated only in the UK not in another country. Those things would make me happy.

I would have chosen the Canadian model myself. The financial centre that is London would be fine in the long run, fintech is blossoming in London and would do so even more out of the EU.

Fair enough. Put like that it sounds ok. The devil is in the detail tho.

Access to the worlds largest trading block of 500m people won't be as free as now, and we'll have to pay something anyway. Why would the EU give us better trade terms than their members get?

Canada-EU trade deal does not suit the UK. Not least, most of what we do is services. That deal doesn't have any provision for services. In other words a big chunk of our economy that exports services to the EU would close down overnight.

Fintech is blossoming. But New York and Paris are growing as fiancial hubs since the Brexit vote, and we're losing out. Is it a bad thing? Maybe not. Less tax revenue sure, but maybe London is too big, too successful? Maybe there are too many people.

As for laws, most EU ones relate to dull trade issues. There are some on environmental issues as well. Can you name an EU law that you find so abhorrent?

Does it matter that an exited UK would probably have more immigration from outside europe? A less white UK.

Three for starters:

- Public sector tendering (a stitch-up that sucks all money and ability for strategic planning out of the public sector)

- White bias immigration (immigration should be based on personal relationships, compassion and/or skills; not race)

- Vehicle emissions laws (basing them on CO2 only, not particulates, to support (pro diesel) German and French manufactures over (pro petrol) American and Japanese ones

How does EU law do that? How would UK law be different? We'd get rid of tendering?

- White bias immigration (immigration should be based on personal relationships, compassion and/or skills; not race)

Would you extend that to Scots and Irish too?

I think there is some change in these laws to modernism them. The EU being a means to affect positive environmental change accross a continent (and beyond). How would the UK set things up in isolation to change the worlds production of cars?

Yeah - just let the public sector buy what they want, from who they want, and for as long as they want. The whole competition and level playing field stuff is just a massive stitch up that creates cartels to rip off public bodies. Rules like having to re-tender for big things like IT systems every 5 years just prevents them from ever getting to a working stage, and causes massive waste.

Would you extend that to Scots and Irish too?

Yes. Immigration should be based on values. Most Scots (post-independence) will be able to claim duel citizenship anyway

The EU lagged behind the rest of the western rules because they promoted the financial interests of their big businesses over the healt of their citizens. The UK is already ahead of the big countries on going carbon free. The UK could take a lead by say having an immediate ban on the sale of non-hybrid new cars (which is completely against EU level playing field rules).

Bit of an odd one.

A CITY councillor in charge of schools policy who rails against privatisation sends his daughter to the most expensive private girls' school in the country.

The £40,000-a-year Roedean school in Brighton boasts its own golf course, swimming pool, theatre, and chapel – and even has a private tunnel to the beach.

Councillor Nick Childs is deputy leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, and chairs the Children Young People and Schools committee in charge of education in the city.

He was elected in May as part of a slate of candidates approved by the city's active Momentum campaign group.

He regularly shares tweets from Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour Party, and far-left pressure groups.

And he is leading the fight against plans to turn struggling Moulsecoomb primary school, rated inadequate by Ofsted, into an academy.

This would pave the way for the school to accept private finance, and take it out of local authority control.

On Twitter he has slammed what he calls a "fetish for privatisation" at the Department for Education, called schools watchdog Ofsted "an enforcement agent of neoliberalism" and spoken of his "socialist vision" for education in the city.

Just last week he tweeted: "Privatisation fetish won't provide our children with good education. Our city will."

But Cllr Childs has chosen to send his daughter to the most expensive and exclusive private girls' schools in the country: £40,000-a-year Roedean School

What gives with these projects and the way that the people in charge cannot ever get the cost right

So Corbyns written to Labour to say they need to address antisemitism in the party? So he was lying before when he claimed there was none?
