Kieran Trippier

His crossing was not as good yesterday but the positions he took up were first class, as for the free kick it was a belter. As i have said before playing three at the back suits his game and gives him the freedom to be at his best.

What a bonus this lad could be from a goal threat POV!
Wonderful free kick, hit the side netting?

Looking at that table does this mean the free kick takers are getting worse / keepers better given they’ve all retired?! Be interesting to know how many per game / per effort too, has Trippier scored with his last two efforts, including the WF semi??
I cannot find detailed figures for free-kick conversion rates but stumbled across this article...

Has scoring from free-kicks become a dying art? Looking at the numbers from 2017/18, you would think so.

Only 16 direct free-kicks were scored this season, a record low by some distance. The lowest previous return from a full Premier League campaign was 25, in 2015/16.

At first glance it appears that free-kick specialists are thin on the ground...

What I really liked about Trips' freekick was how 'normal' it looked i.e. he just passed it firmly into the net.

It wasn't some unrepeatable worldie crazy swerver, he just struck it properly into the corner... I love these goals, they look so simple and repeatable. Let's hope so.

The lad has some swagger to him. Something must have happened to him this summer to give him such confidence.

It takes a confident man to stand next to Christian Eriksen and say: “I fancy this one, mate,” when a free-kick is about to be taken, but this is exactly what Kieran Trippier can do these days. By the time the Tottenham right-back returned from the World Cup in Russia in mid-July, his life had changed completely. As one of the best performers in an England team who reached the semi-finals for the first time in 28 years, he had become a household name.

This has some disadvantages – “I get stopped in M&S these days. That didn’t use to happen,” he says with a smile – but mainly it is all positive. His confidence has rocketed and it means he can step up and take free-kicks for Spurs despite the presence of Eriksen, one of the best set-piece specialists in the world. Against Fulham last Saturday it was Trippier rather than the Dane who dispatched a beautifully curled free-kick over the wall to give Spurs a 2-1 lead – and why not? After all, only one of them has scored in a World Cup semi-final.

Trippier, however, laughs at the idea of the two of them fighting over a free-kick. “No way, I’m not like that. Fulham was my first game back and I felt good. Me and Christian, if we have a free-kick and I place it but he says he fancies it then I’ll let him take it, no problem. No problem at all. If he came up to me and said: ‘I fancy this,’ I’d say: ‘Take it, mate.’”

Thing is. Eriksen has lost his Mojo at Free kicks these past years. Barely looks like scoring from one. So I feel like Tripps should have first dibbs now instead of Eriksen.

Another classy performance from him tonight. Got an assist for Kane's goal from his superbly floated corner to the far post, then played a pivotal role in the build up to our second with a typically sweet first-time pass down the flank that put Eriksen through into so much space the Dane had all the time in the world to set up Lucas for his first and our second.

No one, but no one, can ping such sweet first-time passes and crosses so consistently as Trips, he deserves SO much more recognition for what is an exceptioal and deadly skill.

He's great going forward, but still looks a lot more comfortable in a proper wing-back role with that extra defensive cover behind him. 1v1 against Shaw he lost out on a couple of occasions and teams with quality wide players will target him if he's in a back 4, imo.

A narrative that has been going some time. Yes he has been vulnerable in the past but can you honestly remember the last time it actually happened?

Yes, Shaw probably had the upper hand first half but I thought Trips coped well defensively overall and his superior quality going forward in the second gave him and us the decisive edge.

From the top of my head, last season against Sane (unless I'm mis-remembering). Most of the time, it won't be an issue as we are on the front foot which is where Trippier excels.

Yeah but that's my point, that was nearly a year ago? Look we all recognise he's not outstanding defensively but it's months since he was last skinned and he's come up against a few top players in that time. So maybe time to lay that narrative to rest?

I'm not digging him out, I think he's been great. But he does have a weakness in certain 1v1 situations and as a team, we'll need to recognise it.

Name me one full back, ever, that hasn't had a weakness and been vulnerable in some way?
Maybe Cafu.

In 1v1 v fast wingers, I never felt Walker was vulnerable. Weaknesses yes, all players have their weak points, but I'm talking specifically about a 1v1 battle with a quick, high quality attacker.

Anyway, I don't want to drone on about it, as Trippier has been excellent for us and I enjoy watching him play. I think he's one of the best technical players in our team.
