Danny Rose

JellySpur

Espen Baardsen
Didn't see a thread on this so I apologise if there's already one that fits the bill...

I'm quite interested in gauging you lot's opinion on Rose as a left back. I personally like him quite a bit I think he's a good left back, needs to learn a bit defensively (though imo is much more advanced than walker defensively which isn't bashing walker because I think he is potentially class) and always looks dangerous.

I think perhaps he needs a season on loan to a PL club playing left back before we can fully know how good he is. Hopefully he can prove me correct and flourish here as an understudy and eventual successor to Disco Benny. Seems like a nice lad aswell and will always be in our hearts after THAT goal.

So what is everyone's opinion on him?

I like him too, but I do not think he needs a season on loan. At the end of last season when BAE was injured Rose excelled in the two or three matches he played in. At Anfield he looked the best player on the pitch. I think he is perfectly good enough to fill in for BAE. I thought his crossing was poor today, but in the past I have often noted that he is a better crosser of the ball than BAE. Unfortunately Rose was not tested defensively today

Never a left back in a million years. Weak, indecisive, suspect distribution and poor defensively. An accident waiting to happen and vastly inferior to Benny.
Not even good cover.
Oh, and barely average as a left winger.

Very young.
Very inexperienced.
Did well last season when he played a few games in a row.
Let's give the lad a chance.

This.

I tend to think that the more people see of him, the less they'll be impressed. Watched him a lot in the reserves over the years and, aside from tenacity and a bit of pace, he doesn't really have much to his game.

Having said that, Livermore had even less in terms of raw materials and he's defying odds for the time being, so who knows?

Ok, fair enough. Just commenting on the what i have seen today and previous weeks.
He may improve, probably will a bit, but he needs to improve enormously to have a future as part of our first team.

Could you name and provide video evidence of a goal or clear cut goal scoring opportunity which a mistake or inferior defending by Rose has been a direct cause for?

You guys seem to be reasonable in giving him time though so I hope you don't take my over-eagerness for evidence to be a slight at all to any of you, I understand what you mean about him lacking somewhat in raw ability Bankrupt but, I think thats mainly due to him being played as (imo out of position) a winger for the majority of his career similar to Townsend being played in left back in the Europa leag)e (crap name really i miss the uefa cup) which just made him seem ineffective.

Rose basically spent his entire Spurs career, until Redknapp got his hands on him, as a central midfielder. He was obviously a winger at Leeds, so I'm not entirely sure what the thinking was behind that, but possibly because they thought he lacked the skill and final ball to be a winger.

Townsend, since you mention him, has twice the potential of Rose. Would hate to see his chances limited for the sake of trying to forge Rose into a Spurs player.

I think he's decent defensively. His crossing today wasn't up to much. He made 7 interceptions today, more than twice as many as any other Spurs player.

he tried very hard against blackburn, but his passing truly was woeful at times.. makes you appreciate how well ekotto gets the ball into the front players feet.

i don't think rose will ever be good enough to be a first choice player at spurs.. i said the same thing about livermore and i stand by it.

he will be a squad player here at best, maybe a starter at a team like fulham or WBA or something like that.

Livermore (for all the stick he gets here), is a very solid player imo, does what is asked, and doesn't make too many mistakes
Walker has a lot of promise (again gets stick, hmmm a trend?) and his physicality gives him an edge over Rose (much like I think Bale's does over Lennon)

Rose has shown glimpses, but needs to work on his positioning and definetely his delivery (based on why/how we use FBs at Spurs). At this point in his career I don't see him as good enough for a team with Spur's ambitions, his best option is a season loan at a PL side where he would need to prove people wrong.

Hope he gets a loan deal to a PL club looking to play him as a left back next season. There are some very poor left backs in the league so I don't see why that shouldn't be possible. For me he looks alright, but he needs games week in week out to improve a bit quicker.

He ie a left winger playing left back and it shows. I would love for him to have a run on the wings.

Did all right yesterday, and we know he can do much better, like he proved last season.

For a young back-up he's good for us at the moment, but I'm still in doubt whether he if first choice material. Definite potential though. And still only 22.

I really am amazed to see people slating him, considering he has not had a run of games to make such judgements
