Goals from crosses

How many goals have we scored from crosses this season? It seems to be quite a few from recollection.

But it gets debated in nearly every OMT (my apologies if you don't read those) and invariably ends up with scara going on a banning rampage*

I for one love watching scaramanga on the rampage, one week it's going to on nature's weirdest, I'm sure of it.

Despite the grumbles of conversation being had prior ..

I'm sure someone can dig up the stat, but I'd agree anecdotally that it would seem so, specifically

- More goals from crosses, especially headed goals (can think of Harry, Dele, Davies, Eriksen).

Simply think its a maturing of Poch's system, we have Harry, Dele and recently Erikson making themselves available in box, we have Rose, Walker, Trippier, Eriksen & Sissoko all capable of delivering consistent balls into the box.

Might just be that we're crossing a lot more.

Crosses are something like a 1 in 20 - 1 in 30 chance of scoring. If we're putting in 20-30 crosses a match then we're likely to score roughly one a match.

Don't disagree, think its a bit of a circle

- Previously if a wide player hit an early cross into the box, no one, or only one player was there (well marked), so little return.
- Now with Dele, Eriksen and even FB's getting into box, the supplying player will see the opportunity, probably deliver more, we get more ...

It would be interesting to see what types of attacks yields the most goals, which types of attacks are the most effective and so on, in the Premier League (not to mention how the various types of attacks are classified).

Also, it might be that crossing has a low scoring output in general, and I guess it's a question of what defines a cross (or a failed cross - does a failed cross have to end with a shot not going in, or could it be just a stray long ball?), but considering we've scored 10 or so goals from crosses over only the past 4-5 games, I'd say we'd be stupid not to continue trying to score goals from crossing in our coming matches, as we're clearly scoring goals from them, and very likely at a much higher rate than the average.

Not sure, I think crosses (like all attacks) are successful if they are part of a variety of options

- i.e. if all we did was ping crosses in all day, a team would adapt very quickly and shut it down (too predictable)
- if its a part of a broader strategy that includes crosses, direct running, quick short passes, occasion long ball, then it's far more effective.

Re the change, I just think we have a couple more people who provide decent crosses now and our CM's support Kane more with runs to be on the end of it.

Through balls into the box yield a goal in roughly every 5 attempts if memory serves.

There's a reason why high cross volume teams tend to finish toward the bottom of the league and high through ball volume teams tend to finish toward the top.

Admittedly I haven't read the article as I'm about to go to bed, but isn't part of the reason the fact that bricker teams tend to cross more, because they lack the technical quality to play accurate through balls? Correlation vs causation and all that.

Also, this doesn't take into account how much harder it is to play a through ball compared to a cross. If it's 6-7 times easier to play a cross than a through ball into the area, statistically crossing would be a better option.

Indeed, through balls seem to be very strictly defined in the world of football statistics - according to Whoscored, as a team we've only played 9 successful through balls all season in the PL.

Bingo, earlier this season ( in the Rose thread i think) some were saying that our fullbacks needed to put better crosses in. I said at the time that their crossing could improve but at that time we did not have that many runners attacking the space in the box and that was partly to blame as well. Since then i guess Poch has got them working at it and we now have bodys getting on the end of the crosses.
