Southern Rail

Best for who, do you think ticket prices will be lower? As a commuter would prefer two members of staff on the train for those times things go wrong.
Best for everyone in the long term as there won't be unions to interrupt services.

Over the long term prices will be kept lower by automation, in the short term I expect any savings to be snapped up by greedy staff/unions.

How about First Class carriages all have a guard so that those who want one can pay for the privilege? Removing the unreliable, human element from the system (especially as it's unionised) can only make the experience better.

You expect savings to be snapped up by the unions and not the shareholders, do you even believe that?

I get the overtime argument but I think the stat is that nearly 80% of regional train lines are run without a guard and independent H&S has worked with the development of new trains and said it is safe for drivers to work the doors.

For me as someone that travels on the tube which is the same thing probably worse as it is busier, they manage to run a very good service which includes a new late night service without guards and their H&S record is pretty decent.

Work to rule I can handle, not working at all to stop modernization for the better especially when you are not losing your job...BS

Could not agree more with all of that, I am not a union man, always thought they were like weeds that needed to be killed off and sadly Maggie as good as she was only cut them back, they have been allowed to regrow since then. So no guards is fine for me is not an issue, but southern have been caught with their pants down because no company should be relying on overtime to run a basic service.

What makes me sick is almost all of the guards have now accepted their new contracts, yet strikes have continued. ASLEF has mysteriously joined in, despite the fact that the majority of their members operate driver only trains on other networks and do so safely and happily, now if that is not a contradiction then what is?

I do not understand why if the guards have accepted the new deals why are they on strike? If it were me, well I have always had a very belligerent attitude to authority, I would just tell the unions to fcuk off. But then Corbyn and his righ hand man(busy guy) have been caught encouraging it and sending texts supporting it.

Where are you reading that they have accepted it? Trying to find it and can't

Bit of a circular argument there as if strikes were effective then the guards wouldn't have left the trains.

Also shareholders are taking profit now...
Strikes are regular and effective enough to push up wages - you only need to look at a tube or train driver's salary vs education to see that.

They can also be overcome though, if there's enough will and bravery to stand up to bullying.

Shareholders are still getting their payout so either the unions are not as effective as you think or less greedy than you state

Is it only gtr that are dealing with the unions, think its around 200m a year paid out to shareholders across the UK, unions not aware of that?
Last I checked Go Ahead Group (the majority shareholder that has other successful interests) paid out something short of £40m and that was partly to cover for a massive stock dip due to union trouble. I can't find a Southern or GTR dividend anywhere.

Investing in an industry with unionised staff is inherently risky - I refuse to do it and so do a lot of other people I discuss investments with (including those who do it for a living). If you want capital to invest, you have to be an attractive proposition - if unions fudge your valuation every few years then you'll have to pay out decent dividends.

Ok but you were arguing that Unions would take all ptofits, as unions are involved in the whole of the UK i stand by

No of course he doesn't. I have it on good authority, from an impeccable source that our good old Scara was formerly a member of Militant Tendency and remains a fervent Trot. He only comes over all right wing and controversial like on here, to generate traffic. The site does belong to him after all. All profits go towards his revolutionary activities.

Don't you mean, scabs, sell outs and blackguards?

says it a lot better than I,

Great video. This is what the Tories are all about. Doing shonky deals with their mates in big business and doing anything and I mean anything to drive profits up. I think Marx referred to this as "an inherent contradiction in capitalism", that being, that if you keep putting consumers out of work there will ultimately be no demand. Of course Scara would say "but there will be all these new shiny emerging jobs." The problem is, capitalism is finding so many ways to get rid of workers, the new jobs cannot keep up. And Scara reckons the unions are greedy. His whole philosophy is centred on greed. It seems to only be a problem for him, when someone else wants a look in. Gotta laugh.

Its always been the same in progression terms. It took 20 years and 100,000 men to build the pyramids, it would take a lot less time and me to do it now. It might sound like a cold thing to say but we all profit from change, I would imagine to a man on this forum we own products that have been produced by industry that has streamlined its production and staffing over the years, we don't moan when the products improve and become cheaper. Its the same with the trains for me and thats not me pulling up the ropes and saying I'm alright jack, its just life and always has been.
