I can't stand this competition but we haven't had to play in the ridiculous group stages, Man Utd are laughably favorites to win this, we're 2nd favs, there's Roma and then a lot of also ran's, this looks very winnable and the carrot for me more than the trophy is the CL entry of course. And to those who talk about winning trophies, the europa won't exist in 10 years and who talks about when they won the cup winners cup? remember that one ?

I am old school. I liked the Cup Winners Cup. Unlike the EL and a lot of the team in the CL, anybody that was in it had actually won something the previous season!

I talk about it quite a bit, given that it was the first European trophy ever won by an English club. A little old club called Tottenham Hotspur won it in 1962, thus becoming the first English team to make their mark on Europe, having already achieved another first by securing the century's first double in 1961.

Cups mean an awful lot, in more ways than one.

Indeed; it's quite shocking to see fans of Spurs (traditionally the ultimate CUP team) effectively now saying that "Trophies are overrated"...

1963 but I get what you mean ;)

I totally don't subscribe to the view Mr_B displays. I'm 34 and my first real experience of Spurs in Europe due to the Heysel ban was the 1991-92 CwC campaign and I can remember every game against Stockerau, Hadjuk Split, Porto and Feyenoord. I also remember Man Utd winning it the previous season against Barcelona which was the first European final I remember watching live on tv.

Great Competition and it should be revived imo, it didn't need changing at all but as is always the way with Fifa/Uefa et al they decide to make changes for changes sake and people within those organisations have to justify their job and try to create what they see as a legacy for their time at said organisation.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Please not another 2000km trip to the arse end of nowhere to face some mickey mouse side we've never heard of. A nice short haul flight to somewhere in France, Germany, Spain or Italy would be ideal.

We can draw: Anderlecht Astra Giurgiu Athletic AZ Celta Vigo Gent Hapoel Beer-Sheva Krasnodar Legia Warszawa Ludogorets Razgrad Borussia Mönchengladbach Olympiacos PAOK Rostov Villarreal

Lets hop over to Anderlecht. Or perhaps a greek side.

Greece is a 3-4 hour flight, would prefer something closer.

With no obvious Seville/Dortmund in the competition, we really should be winning it this year. Roma are probably the biggest threat, maybe Schalke.

Anyone belittling this competition:
1) needs to remember the 1992-2006 when qualifying for it was our ever illusive dream
2) should have attended games over the past 3 seasons to have witness the rebirth of new Tottenham side (the emergence of Kane and co., Lamela's rehabilitation etc., 1882 Movement tackling the atmosphere problems etc.)

Anderlecht showed last season that they are a good side. Losing Defour will have hurt them, but they caused us a lot of problems at the back and Dendoncker in midfield is a rock. For me they are the ones to avoid.

Why do you do this to yourself? Even Man utd will have a better chance than us - not to talk of Monchengladbach, Lyon, Shaktar or Villareal. It would be a feat to get past ALL of those clubs if we are not being rose-tinted
