Yaya, are you Campbell in disguise...

Emirates Marketing Project and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure thinks he is not regarded as one of the best players in the world because he is from Africa.

He feels countryman Didier Drogba and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o are also undervalued because they are African

And the 30-year-old says some people still regard Africans as "animals not human beings".

Toure has scored 22 goals this season, helping City win the League Cup and challenge for the Premier League title.

Club-mate Samir Nasri recently said Toure would be celebrated as one of the world's best midfielders if he was not African.

In an exclusive interview for Football Focus on BBC World News, Toure said: "I think what Samir was saying was definitely true."

Is it cos I is black

Toure has won league titles in four countries - Ivory Coast, Greece, Spain and England - and was part of the Barcelona team that won the Champions League in 2009.

"To be honest, proper recognition has only come from the fans," said the three-time African player of the year. "I don't want to be hard and I don't want to be negative, but I want to be honest."

Toure feels the media should do more to promote African players.

"If we play well and we don't have the recognition from the media, we are not going to be where we want to be," he said

Toure also feels African players need to do far more to stand out, drawing comparisons with Barcelona duo Andres Iniesta and Xavi, both former team-mates of his.

He says Iniesta and Xavi are often praised for their attacking skills, but rarely singled out for criticism when they fail to defend properly.

In contrast, Toure claims he is regularly picked on by the media when he makes a defensive mistake.

The Ivorian is also unhappy that Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world with Cristiano Ronaldo, is recognised around the world but players like himself are not.

He said: "If you go to any part of Africa now, people will say, 'yes, we know him [Messi]', but when you come to Europe and say 'Yaya Toure' people will say, 'who is that?' Some will say they know my name but not know my face. But they will know Messi's face."

Toure, who played in Belgium, Russia, Greece, France and Spain before moving to England, says he will be disappointed if he is not named player of the year by the Professional Footballers' Association.

player of the year?

:ross:

now I doubt anyone hates the dippers as much as I do but even I have to concede that thats a one horse (unintended) race

Re: Yaya, are you Campbell in disguise...

Campbellesque in his attempts to blame factors for him not being recognised as the best player in the PL. The real reason being that he er....isn't.

Re: Yaya, are you Campbell in disguise...

I think that he has been the best player in the league if judged over the whole period he has been playing in England

He says he got recognition from the fans and is right to say that. Maybe sponsors and the media do not give Africans enough credit I do not know as I try more and more to avoid the media.

But fans do not care where you are from, I said for about 5 years that Drogba was the best striker in the world and I hated it because he played for those chav cnuts. Fans do not care do not think the media do but I would not know.

Always think it is a little sad people moaning on about how they are perceived the media, people that work in the media or who talk about the media are the sort of people to avoid at parties as they are self important bores. Know a guy who works for radio 1 digital and he is the biggest **** I know.

Utter madness

Only just seen this story, it is all to crazy or am I just being old fashioned. Anyone think he is in the right.

Frankly I think the whole thing of cake on your birthday in the work place is a bit stupid but each to their own I guess. Emirates Marketing Project players only went there for the money so I guess the city owners have to expect this.

It's just bull**** from his agent to try and get more money out of Emirates Marketing Project. He has pulled the same trick at the end of the previous two seasons too.

They didn't actually wish him happy birthday. Well they did but a little late. Toure tweeted about it. Come late in the post apparently.

He has basically tweeted that he's off in the summer too.

"No. Money is not important. He has enough money."
Excellent, get on the phone Lev, 10k a week, jelly and ice cream on May 13th and as many handshakes with whoever he can find knocking about the Pat Jennings Lounge as he can cope with.

Cannot wait to see his next club make sure that he has the biggest ****-off cake and candles and jelly and ice-cream and balloons and streamers and bunting and clown and sweeties EVER on his next 'big-boy-birthday'…

:ross:

Someone needs to inform his agent that in the real world, where real people live, this bull**** excuse is actually considered remedial.

So funny, I immediately thought the same thing…jelly & ice-cweam faw the poor poor baby!

Read an article a while back about how Emirates Marketing Project welcome players to their club. It was all about how they'd find out everything they could about a player, even finding out about his family. They'd find out their girlfriends favourite shops, help them find a house, school for their kids etc etc, whatever it took to attract them and make them feel looked after. If City goes to those lengths to make players feel important and looked after then them missing their birthday is more of a big deal.. especially if other players are fussed over?

Wish I could find the article now because it would explain what I mean better.

We get a day off on our birthdays haha oh and a measly card from my team which is a nice gesture.

Would love extra salary in lieu though ****ers.

Haha very funny.....

Oh it's a real story?????? **** off Toure you stupid **** get some perspective.

Does anyone seriously think that he won't be a Emirates Marketing Project player next season?
