Paulo Gazzaniga

And yet for all the criticism Gazza is getting now, when he covered cup games for Lloris he looked good. So much so that posters argued that he should be number1. For me he is far behind Lloris but then look at the reserve keepers for other top teams and you will probably see the same. I don’t think he is as bad as the hyperbole. He is, of course, not helped by the shower of defending in front of him. I said recently that I felt meh about Toby signing a new contract. Games like today confirm my thoughts on him.

That's fair enough. The problem is that he's gotten an extended run of games and over a period like that, all his deficiencies have been laid bare. But that's what you expect from a backup I guess. Bravo for City is muck. Adrian isn't great. Caballero isn't up to much (is he still at Chelsea?). Romero at United is pretty good though.

I hope this run of games has put to bed any notion that he's fit to lace Hugo's boots though.

Someone is going to have to do it.

The reason for the clamour for him when Lloris was fit was because people were focusing on the elements of his game that are better than Lloris' and overlooking those that are worse. It happens a lot.
Neither are good enough. Lloris sadly anymore and Gaza was never supposed to play so many matches for us.

A new keeper is needed.

An upgrade on Lloris will be very expensive. I'd like to see him in a settled team and not being asked to play a high risk game before making a call on him.
That's not an unreasonable view. Poch did have him trying to play in a way that patently didn't suit him. Mou will just have him kicking it longer so that danger element will be far less worrying. Of course if he can get back to his level pre 2018 - 2019 then the need for a new keeper would be much less pressing.

He won't need to come out as far under Mourinho. We have started playing it out from the back again these last few games. My biggest concern about him is whether he will be hesitant to go to ground after this injury.

I can't imagine Mou will spend to much time playing it from the back with Lloris, his passing is just too poor for it to be worth the risk, it will likely be rollouts and if that isn't safe kick it longer.

At his peak, I would say that his short game was one of his great assets and that it was his long balls that have always been weak. A good short game is aided by having two great fullbacks to pass to and who are capable of playing their way out of trouble.

Don't forget, before Lloris dislocated his elbow, he flapped in an INCREDIBLY weak manner to let a goal in.

And the game before that, he tried a Cruyff turn on the 6 yard box and the striker smirked as he tapped it into our net.

Both were standout, shockingly bad goalkeeping
