Daniel Levy - Chairman

Nope. Not wishful thinking at all. I hope you’re right for the sake of the club.

Sorry steff am i misreading your post, do you not think that Levy has told Jose that he will have money to spend but not shedloads that he had at Utd. Because if that is the case then i believe you may be mistaken as i am sure Levy would have explained it fully to Jose.

No worries at all mate.

I just wonder if when the moment comes to do a deal quickly and crisply -possibly paying a bit over to get it done- if Daniel will actually do it. I am sure their discussions have been clear and frank, but I believe they were under Poch too with regards to getting players in early.

Let’s hope for all of us that Mou has got a nee Levy in that regard...very possible he has.

why should we ever pay more than we believe a player is worth. even city dont do that

Because when a player is being chased by a couple of clubs, sometimes the valuation will get distorted beyond what "we" think is the fair price. And we lose the player. Or play a game to save 7-8 million quid. which we end up losing double because the manager doesn't get the player he wants/no bedding in time, etc, etc. I am not suggesting recklessness, indeed that would be both reckless and stupid, but sometimes you have to adapt to the market rate in order to get what you want. Imagine applying the principle of not paying over our perception of valuation in the housing market?!

You then don’t get caught in negative equity in theory...
No one in their right mind over pays for anything and you should always have a price your willing to pay and NO MORE
It’s what I do for a living and I’d rather walk away every time

I think you just fixed 2008.

Right. You don't want to be in the negative, I get that. But is anyone in any doubt at all that Levy enjoys the transfer market game, and getting his target eventually having worn the other club down, for a few mill less? My point is that you save a few million, but long-term you lose lots more because the signing don't get the summer to bed in.

Better to lose that player than pay too much imo.

Being alive for the next hand is how you win in the end.
That's what they thought in 2018 and it ended up costing Poch his job.

Football is not the housing market not the stock market. There is no rationale to the cost of a player just a willingness (or not) to pay the requested fee.

If you don't pay the fee you might still have your hand but you probably won't win the game.

So levy needs to striker a better balance between cold hearted negotiation and helping his coaches out by acquiring players in reasonable time.

No your point was we should pay more than we believe a player is worth
Then you have added buying early is key
We brought NDombele early. That’s not made any difference
Sessegnon was injured so when we brought him made no difference
Lo Celso was away until a few weeks before the window shut so we may have gained a couple of weeks training with him
None of this made any difference in reality as players can settle straight away or sometimes take a season to bed in.

It has in the past cost us points and integration time. The points that meant we couldnt catch Leicester or Chelsea.

Using the brick show of this season as a counter arguement doesn't really stand. We had well established behind the scenes issues most emanating from Levy's existing practises in the window.

You might think there's no problem but every coach Mou included will end up frustrated when there is a player who has clearly been identified but the process to complete the signing drags on beyond a reasonable time table.

I get what you're saying, but there has to be some balance. Spending millions more per transfer would cost us the chance to spend in other areas, to spend on talented players for the future or to secure new deals through increased wage spending.

Or put as a question. How much of our transfer budget would you set aside to get deals done early rather than spending that on strengthening the squad?

Who did we sign that season that cost us for not playing well?

Son signed on the last day of the window 2015/2016. Negotiating for Mane and Wijnaldum where we couldn't or wouldn't match the wages offered in 2016/2017, instead we signed Sissoko on the last day of the window. [emoji58]

If I look back further there are many times we've struggled in way but I can't recall specifics off the top of my head.

Having a few players in late is no excuse for the rest of the squad not being on it from week one.
You say no excuse but if the new player is supposed to fill a specific gap or help adjust the system it can be understandable why maybe the season doesn't start so well. I can't think of a single coach who is happy not having new players in for preseason.

Interesting as both the signings we made that year have publicly commented how hard it is to adapt to Tottenham. Sissoko did just that only yesterday when talking about NDombele and how he is advising him. Son wanted to leave after that season and now look

Sissoko still hasn't adapted [emoji38]

Things may have been easier initially for Son if he had, had the fabled Poch presason.

I do understand that it is a balancing act I just think the balance is slightly out of kilter. Ndombele's early signing this season is a good sign although Lo Celso contrasts with that so...[emoji2379]

but we did sign Lo Celso a few weeks after he was back with his club
Propel also have to remember the window has been cut shorter now by some way which doesn’t help things either

I actually think the shortened window was to our benefit as it meant that if we only complete on the last day of the window no games would actually been played at that point.

A return to the old style window gives Levy too much rope to hang the coach from [emoji38]
