What a great offer @Gazza !

Pleased we get to quickly get rid of the smell from the midweek game. On one hand, the side needs stability, on the other JM has to try his players out, and keep them fresh. Not easy for any manager this. Who will play CM? On balance, I hope JM can get enough short-term from Dier and Ndombele because longer-term I think they could do well. BUT they are prone to lapses and start slow. How/can JM address that?

I'm really not convinced by playing N'Dombele as the deepest midfielder. It doesn't give him enough opportunity to play in the parts of the pitch where he can be most effective. I think that his reluctance to track back and risk taking will be exploited by better teams.

Tis why it can only work if Dier plays and we go with one holding midfielder. I think if we want to show aggression/anger at Wednesday's feeble effort, we should go for it. But yes, Ndombele is a conundrum.

Agree. Dier would be the deeper one no?

In short, we have a lot of players who are best in a more attacking role. Aurier. Alli. Probably Ndombele, Lo Celco and Winks too? We don't really have any standout defensive players outside of the CBs and Davies which might be our issue!

Sissoko has done more than 'a job' over the past year. Poch got him playing well, but he is limited. Dier needs games and time. Wanyama....can he get fit and firing?

That’s really beautiful, thank you Mark.

(I really hope I don’t find out later that you’ve just cut and pasted a song lyric)

I guess with Aurier forward we need two players sitting? Whereas if we had a reliable LB, we could free up one CM to roam forward more.

That's not how we play with Dier and Winks. Winks sits deep, Dier plays higher up disrupting. It's pretty standard Mourinho.

And doesn't make sense to me. Dier needs to be the deeper player. Winks gets knocked off the ball now and then and Dier is a better defender. What is his logic for this setup do you think?

It is the biggest issue. Winks is not that player. I think MuMu is going to have to use Dier as a deeper roving presence right now and rely on the forwards to close down from the front the moment possession is lost. I have neglected to mention that IMO Lucas also cost us big-time Wed simply due to the fact he is not an intelligent positional player, thus he does not close down spaces defensively (I know you know, just waffling!)...it is infuriating to think that the 8 goals we have conceded under MuMu have virtually all been through the same area (to my memory...)

I'd be very surprised if he had the forwards pressing high up the pitch. Has he done that anywhere?

Normally, you expect his team's to sit deep out of possession, try to force errors and win second balls. When you look at Winks and Dier, Dier is primarily there to force the error and Winks to win the second ball and transition to attack quickly.

Explained above. It's about forcing errors, winning the second ball and transitioning to attack quickly. This is why it is an issue when your disruptor is playing RB because your RB is daydreaming.
