Jose Mourinho - SACKED

If you were being honest with yourself you would admit your current malaise stems from the Poch situation.
I'm over it, I gave enough stress in my life without worrying about stuff I can't control.

It's not what I would have liked to have happened, but Levy has more of the picture than I do, so I trust him to make the right call.
Do I feel sorry for poch and this isn't all his faulty, yes, do I wish things turned out differently, again yes, don't we all? After all success is success no matter who brings it.

Really good post match interview with BBC radio on Saturday. 2:08 in https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p07vwvk2

Mourinho is asked why he went with Dier and Winks. "I needed one midfielder that was more positional and I needed one midfielder that was more a passer of the ball. So of course when I see Moussa. Moussa is a very good player but different than my needs. I need that stability from Dier and I need the kid to move the ball faster, also positionally, but to move the ball faster to find the attacking players, in the positions we want them to find the ball.

Also mentioned "I brought on Cristian because I though he could give us some stability in a period were we need the ball"

It seems to me like Mourinho is going to look to his first era Chelski set up in terms of how he deploys us. I don't think we will be quite as defensive as some of his previous sides.
Thoughts?

He is pragmatic, the balance of this squad is heavily offensive (you have 6 or mor players that can hurt the opposition). Get the ball to Kane, Son, Dele +1 often enough and you will score. His Madrid side as @Bishop mentioned were a brutal counter attack side at their best.

The narrative has always been tired, the one truth about Jose is when it really matters he will emphasize nullifying/countering the opponent to get the result (basis for boring football commentary)

Re the formation conversation, in more modern implementations a team can play one formation in attack/possession vs. another in defense/out of possession. You also have the concept of players with defensive focus vs. players with offensive focus.

What I'm hoping to see from Jose is keep it simple, get the transition to front working and play a more consistent first team

His different teams have looked quite different, though with similarities. When the diamond discussion was going on here I thought the way he used the diamond for periods in games at Inter to be a very interesting point. Though that Inter team also had the bus parking approach down to a tee. His Real team at their best was attacking and free flowing most of the time from what I remember, but could be a lot more cynical and destructive particularly in games against Barca.

I think he will definitely want to find that defensive solidity. Get to a point where we can feel reasonably confident about keeping a one goal lead against just about anyone. I'd also expect a fairly conservative counter attacking approach in the biggest games, based on that defensive solidity when in place.

Outside of that I'm sure he wants us to have that attacking mode in our locker, but how it will look, how it will develop, I really have no idea.

Where I think perhaps he's gotten things wrong in the past is too much focus on the defensive and cynical side when under pressure. It's like getting that back has been the only thing he could focus on. I hope that's one area where he's improved.

Think it's interesting that Alasdair Gold (journo) at least has claimed repeatedly that Pochettino disliked the long passes from the back from Alderweireld in particular. This has had me very confused, particularly as we have often had a shortage of creativity and passing tempo both in central midfield and from our full backs.

Thought there were signs against West Ham of us taking a more balanced approach between building up through midfield and going direct. Seems in line with what we've seen from Mourinho in the past. Gold also brought up a good point, using Kane as a target man more will see him getting in a lot of tough duels, he's fairly tall and strong, but he's no Drogba or Ibra. Might see more injuries to Kane and we currently have no other realistic target man option in the squad. Moura has a great leap, Parrott is strong for his age, but there's no Llorente option.

Seeing as Mourinho seems to favour having a tall strong striker at most times we could become even more dependent on Kane than we have in the past, his injuries might even come more frequently.

Mourinho will have to develop a plan B, bring through Parrott at record speed or sign another option up front I think.

Doesn't surprise me in the least, sounds like Wenger. Poch like many top managers have a stubbornness to their vision and it was clear that we sometimes didn't use the obvious option.

Not sure about your analysis of Kane, I've seen him physically bully defenders several times, he's strong. Again I think Jose likes to bully CB's but it's more a side effect of the main target man being up front all the time (West Ham was the highest I've seen Kane play in a while all game).

What I want to see is

- Fast transition to front 4 as often as possible
- Direct route to the runners (see above), use Toby as deep lying playmaker in possession
- Play into the box in the air more often, Kane, Dele sneaking in back post and Moura (surprisingly with his height) are all very effective in the air.

The more the opposition is worried about you hurting them, the less they will overcommit to attack which in itself will help us defensively.

Didn't the West Ham CB get subbed after being bullied out the game by Kane?

Seems like every player has a sensible, normal role, all fine... and then there is Aurier who is expected to deliver crosses as part of the front 5 AND also be a defender at times.
So it is almost inevitable that he gets tired and lunges into someone or doesn't track a runner or does something stupid.

It is a matter of time until we all exclaim "What the hell was he doing, why didn't he track the runner like Davies? Why did he lunge in?"

We are basically expecting our worst player to do the most work and play 2 or 3 roles all at once...

I do like this wonky system, it works on paper well... but Aurier is schizophrenic and not a good player to base the system around.

I think you are not seeing it the correct way. The only thing Aurier can do decently well is run into space and at times cross a ball .. and so to compensate for his lack of ability he is isolated with the other three defenders playing wonky to stabilise aurier.

This is not to say that we will lack as you will see dier covering with moura tucking in. When moura gets found out a little then we overload the right with son coming across.

"Is Jose Mourinho actually a defensive manager?
The Athletic's Michael Cox, Ali Maxwell and Liam Twomey examine Jose Mourinho's career from Porto, through Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, right up to Man Utd, with a particular emphasis on how his style of play has evolved over the years and what that might tell us about how his Spurs reign will pan out."

I think this is definitely a fair call. Poch could certainly be stubborn, and it has to be said, for his build from the back to work, you need a goalkeeper who is Ederson-esque and FBs who are technically excellent and pacy; neither of which he had for 18 months. Ironically, we won in Amsterdam because we played a long ball forward towards Nando...and I agree, getting Dele ghosting in on the back post a la Chelski at home a few seasons ago will be massive.

I think it is worth defining the "fast transition"... I too want to see more of that, but via passing and dynamic football. Again, if we get Chelski mk1 I would be more than OK with that, and as stated, it looks to me like he is going for it.

He will not be satisfied with Toby in that role as he would be far too easy to neutralize, thus I think as "a part" of the overall, yes, but he will continue to look to Winks to provide the speedy outs with Dier holding.

His changes on Saturday were smart, simple and effective. He can enjoy the clean slate aspect of making some harder decisions, and overall short-term at any rate, it is clear he will prosper as will we.
