Jose Mourinho - SACKED

Although there will be some slight changes in formation and selection I don't think we'll see what he wants until we play Chelsea, that will be after the first full week he will have with the team without midweek fixtures and travelling restricting a good run on the training grounds. I fully expect a big effort to win FA Cup.

i am sure he will, providing the manager sticks to the budget that Levy would have discussed before him taking the job and the manager accepted.
And Levy actually makes any intended purchases in good time, far to often he hamstrings managers by bringing players on the last day of the window, that might work for the bank balance but doesn't work for the squad dynamic and ultimately we are a football club and what happens on the pitch should be the most important thing.

I thought JM said in his press conference that Levy has set his target at top 4 and champions league, if this is true then I don't really see him going all out in the cups when league position is so vital.

Not saying he won't, I just saying from his presser I wouldn't get my hopes up, at least not this season.

I'm sure a top 4 is the target, that's going to be tough, probably means we can only lose 3 more games. I just see a greater effort being up into the FA Cup than in the past 3 years.

Neither you or i on here know what really happens at these purchases and any opinion anyone has on it is guesswork at best. And if you really believe that Levy does not care about what happens on the pitch and does not consider it to be important then i really do not know what to say to that.

No I don't think he doesn't care, it's clear he does. I just think sometimes he needs to make things a happen bit quicker and while we don't know what happens behind the scenes there is a certain pattern that is clear at Spurs under Levy which is not the case with other clubs. It's really as simple as saying a player only joining on the last day of the window doesn't help us, they've missed pre season they've usually missed the first 3 or 4 games as well.

The bolded bit i do/can agree with, but i am sure there are several reasons why that can/does happen. At times though its always Levys fault according to some fans. And that is what gets to some fans and the criticism of Levy as always being to blame is guesswork on their part. (imo).

Well to be honest I think that managers have spoken about their intended targets with Levy going for "alternatives". When Harry had us going we had agreed deals with Cahil and Tevez in place, but were scuppered by cheaper alternatives in Saha and Nelson. Wijnaldum was Pochettinos preferred player and at the last minute we signed Sissoko, a player Pochettino at the time said he knew nothing about after he had signed. There are countless articles directly from the managers mouths.

I know you are a staunch Levy fan which is great to see, however he does not get it right for transfers, or the timing or the players. I understand that he has previously had to work in such circumstances due to infrastructure budget constraints to avoid having to get into bidding wars with Chelsea or others. I think he has done his best with the budgets he has had to work with and it is going to be a battle to get it always right.

However moving forward I didn't see us getting Guzumped for our latest transfers which suggests that we are slowly turning the ship. Everyone has money in the league now so its more about the managers trying to prioritise their needs. Lucky for Mourinho and Levy the groundwork done by both LEVY and Pochettino means that the team only needs a few tweaks of quality peppered with academy players to push us through to the level I think we all, including Levy, have wanted.

Is there any need for it to get toxic?
Levy has seen Mourinho's history, he has seen Levy's work. They've (apparently) had discussion before.
If the contract is deliberately set at only three years with a fair understanding that this is not much more than a short-term appointment, then both parties could easily be satisfied by this. Especially as Jose is building on Levy and Pochettino's work in elevating the club's profile and squad as well as the infrastructure that finally seems near-ready to give significant boost to possible transfer spending.

On an unrelated point, I wonder if Jose sees any sort of parallel between Kane/Son/Moura and Drogba/Robben/Duff. I do not doubt that he really does feel that he has significant resources at his disposal and has enough confidence in his ability to believe that he can do big things with them

I think the one thing people are missing is with respect re expectations, we are not Real, United or some rich asshat's plaything

- 2nd and a trophy will be seen as a massive success
- 2 trophies in 2 years will be again greeted as well done
- He has a vested interest in making this work personally, think his family is very happy in London, he has realized he likes/needs the game

There is far less expectation, he doesn't need to be #1 in the league/country with Spurs, keep us in top 3 (which I think he can do) with occasional cup win is enough. Without the expectation or accusation of failure, far less likely to go to angry Jose.

Re your point, yes, I think Jose has very specific ideas about a lot of our players, he has said exactly what some of us have, it is a very good squad.

as ever the cut of your jib, is razor sharp and refined.

whilst I think deep down it’s very hard to change the core of what we are deep down. I strongly believe in adaptors in this life, and I think Jose is attempting a new upgraded version of himself.

A hungry, reflective, and less confrontational portugeezer can only be good for us.

poch talked of changing our mentality, credit where it’s due, he made great strides in that regard and without him a we wouldn’t even have a manager with this cv without the way poch progressed us.

but here’s my main hope, poch talked about changing our mentality but didn’t quite manage it, that’s not all down to him I understand that now.

I would like Jose to not talk about changing our mentality but work his nuts off behind the scenes and actually accomplish it...

it’s no mean feat, if he can defeat ol ‘spu—rsy’ and deliver us trophies, he really will be what some say he is, one of the top managers of all time.

Have no problem with most of that to be honest, has Levy made mistakes? well the answer is yes of course he has ( like most chairman/managers) i am a big fan of his as you say but he is not super human so like everyone else he does make mistakes and i do not think any fan of his has/will say different.

Is he the best chairman in the Prem? well i think what he has done for us points to saying yes he is. As for future transfers i do believe we will be able to challenge any other club for incoming transfers but we will never be able to throw money at it ( like City and Chelski did). But like i have said before there will always be some fans who will complain that he has not spent enough or got this or that player, its what fans of all clubs do.

Changed the thread title to reflect a new direction in conversation regarding this topic.

It seems to me like Mourinho is going to look to his first era Chelski set up in terms of how he deploys us. I don't think we will be quite as defensive as some of his previous sides.
Thoughts?
Mourinho isn't as defensive minded as many people think he is. Defense is certainly important to him because he is of the thinking that if you do not concede you can not lose but I wouldn't define him as a boring defensive coach. In Mourinho's ideal world he will have world class attackers as well as world class defenders. He knows he can coach a defense and sometimes will just leave the attackers to do it themselves without putting them in too much of a straightjacket. He's very much a game by game coach, so the approach for one match hasn't necessarily been his approach for every game.

I always thought Mourinho played tight football, attacking when needed.
He wins because he is not wasteful and precise in how he allocates his resources.
Was Real Madrid defensive or did they ever park the bus under him?

Too early to tell right now I guess as we still need to resettle the team with contracts running out, deadwood etc. However I am convinced that he has bought into the To Dare is to Do, and Glory Glory ambitions. Or at least Levy would have made it clear to him about it.

His Real side were fairly compact when on defence but compacted into an Incredibly tight spring, their counter attacks were breathtaking sweeping from one side of the pitch to the other in seconds. He even had Ozil in his side and arguably got the best out of him along with his time at Schalke.

Our shape and approach on Saturday isn't a million miles off his general shape, he doesn't need to do too much in terms of shape, maybe personnel needs refreshing particularly the players who are leaving but an Eriksen type isn't something hes usually played with so it's not as big a loss for a Mourinho as it was for Poch.

Absolutely right.
Poch has treated us for most of his tenure, but his results were outliers compared to much of our history. If Jose improves slightly on the best of Poch, we'll be loving it.

My thoughts as well, he is unfairly rated by a lot of opposing fans for the way he acts and plays and its not always justified. If fans can just put aside their hatred and false impressions of him and actually judge his teams performances ( over the years) then they will see that he can play in several different ways ( attacking, defensive, exciting etc) depending on the opposition. I doubt very much that a manager who has 25 trophys on his record has only one way of playing.

As I said in other threads its mainly because opposition fans for the most part only see Mourinho teams when they either play their own side or the big title deciding matches. Those are the games Mourinho refuses to lose and so will be very pragmatic, cynical and maybe even kills the spectacle of the match but that's against an Arsenal, a Manchester United, Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project or Spurs. He has never approached matches against the rest of the league with that attitude, his side's don't turtle up against a West Ham or Burnley and their equivalents.

Well maybe when it's gone tits up at the end of his reign but I don't think you could fairly characterise his entire at a side as being of that nature.

I agree with the bolded bit and that is what makes him such a great manager, for me if i had to put a bet on about which manager could get a result in a certain game he would be the one.

Football fans being what they are should Jose wins a couple of domestic cups I expect there are some who will be calling for his head, after all we got to a CL final and second in the league.

If he then the following season leaves us in 14th in the league without an away win in nearly a year, form looking like relegation and a squad who have downs tools then they would be right to do so.

Your usually one of my favourite posters so I hope you get over Poch soon. The guy had lost it and was not close to turning it round. Did great for us but we need to move on.

Dont think the players are as upset as they make out or they would have put more effort in. Dele particularly is guilty of crocodile tears.

It's nothing to do with poch, it's about fans never being happy.
