Jose Mourinho appointed new Head Coach

Wed 20 November 2019, 06:29|Tottenham Hotspur

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Jose is one of the world’s most accomplished managers having won 25 senior trophies. He is renowned for his tactical prowess and has managed FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United. He has won a domestic title in a record four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010. He is also a three-time Premier League Champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006, 2015).

Commenting on the appointment, Chairman Daniel Levy said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Speaking on his appointment, Jose said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

I wanted Mourinho as manager. Back in 2003. that was when his tactics were still relevant.

I severely hope he can update himself. The manager he was at United is not what we need. Gutted to lose Poch. But more gutted we have picked a manager whose tactics are questionable in modern football and that does not promote youth.

I maybe could have got behind the sacking if we brought in someone dynamic. I'll always support Spurs but I'm baffled by all of this.

So Levy finally gets his man.
I can't say I'm particularly keen on the Jose of recent years, and I definitely can't imagine myself singing his name but let's see what he can do before it all goes pear shaped.
Interesting turn of phrase in the announcement "We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.” It does seem to be confirmation of behind the scenes discontent.

Interesting he mentions the academy, hoping the like of Sessengon and Parrot still have a pathway into the first team.

Well, you'd think a manager would recognise that they have a pattern of initial good results and then falling out with everyone by his third season and thus change his behaviour to avoid repeating the pattern a sixth time.

Either that or sack him in two years.

That's boilerplate - probably written by the club itself. The capitalization of 'club' gives it away, among other markers.

Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur...Jose Mourinho.

Christ, just...just win things, thanks. Anything else is a bonus.

Think some of our players are going to be in for a shock when learning what it takes to be a winner.

Going from a man who thought subs didn't help to someone who will take players off after 20 mins.

Very sad about Poch going. Mourinho and Levy have been flirting for years so the idea that either doesn't understand the other, or won't know how to work together doesn't make sense to me.

Some tell tale clues about Poch are in the statement.

- tactics
- win things
- bring energy and belief to the dressing room
- Excited by quality in the academy

Now reverse each of those and I think Levy is telling us what happened...

You're right, but the last one is an impossibility with Mourinho. Out of Tanganga, Skipp and Parrott (our current crop of promising youngsters) I don't think a single player will make it under Mou.

They weren't going to make it under Poch, either (WindyCOYS called him out on it a while ago - he hasn't been great in terms of integrating academy players), but they might as well move now.

Given that, I think Levy's just trying to keep fans' hopes up with that last one.

The others, yeah, I think Levy's trying to tell us what he found irksome in Poch.
