Mauricio Pochettino - Thank You

I started the Poch thread, five years ago.

With tears in my eyes, I guess it's time for me to end it.

Thank you, Mauricio Pochettino. For everything you ever did.

Thank you for taking over a broken club that was treading water, and going nowhere fast. Thank you for your bravery, in those early days under a warmer sun - thank you for clearing out all the players who never cared, for players who did. Thank you for blooding Ryan Mason, and Nabil Bentaleb, and a young Harry Kane, long before anyone believed in what he could really be. Thank you for coming close to glory, only to be denied at the death - a theme that would repeat itself in years to come. But thank you for giving us our pride back, in those heady days in 2015.

And then...and then. Thank you for bringing the Champions League back to White Hart Lane, for competing to the end with a team of hungry young lions who fought for each other and for every point - who brought a resilience back to this club that it had not seen for fifty long years. We were the villains in 2016, in a year when the story belonged to someone else - but goddamn it, were we proud of you and your boys for trying nonetheless.

And then...2017. Thank you for giving us the happiest year many of us have ever had, when we felt unbeatable - when the boys at Tottenham destroyed everyone, and showed the world what Spurs could do. When teams feared coming to our home - our one and only home, White Hart Lane. When we beat everyone, feared no-one, and dared to dream in an incredible time. Thank you for giving the old Lane the best send-off she could have had.

There were harder times after that. But thank you for taking us through our time away from our home, from the things we knew and loved. Thank you for being strong when we needed you to be - the leader we needed, when we needed him. Thank you for guiding us into the new stadium we now call home. Thank you for trying, despite all the odds against you, and despite all the years when you had to smile and make do with nothing while all the rivals around you spent millions chasing the titles you wanted to bring to Spurs so dearly. Thank you for those great nights, in all those great years - Real Madrid. Dortmund. City.

...and that night in Ajax, when we chased the lone spot of hope amidst a sea of black disappointment. And for one, magical moment..found it. For one magical night, the mice of Tottenham roared like lions, and all of us dared to dream.

Thank you for everything. Thank you for the good times, and for being the man who brought me back from the brink, on many, many levels. And, most importantly....thank you for being a good man. A good human being, who tried his best, never hid and was honest about his emotions through it all.

Godspeed, Mauricio Pochettino. Wherever you go, the memories of what you did will live on.

Five years ago, I started the Poch thread with a simple request - bring back the good times, please.

As I ponder tonight as to what exactly I feel about this club, all I can say is that you did what I had hoped for. You brought the good times back.

Thank you for that.

This is a good progression of where we started, and where we finished. Five years of willing us to believe - daring us to dream, and hauling us to where we needed to go, almost single-handedly.

Five years of miracles, of happiness, and of humanity - of taking us, with all our flaws and imperfections, and never giving up on us.

Thank you.

Mucho gracias ! Some great times, upward trajectory, just not given time at the last - overall, we got our respect back as a 'BIG' club in terms of pushing for the title and consistently finishing top four and the CL final. I would have been happy to give him this season to turn around, i.e. miss out on the CL but stabilise the ship and rebuild the team.

Wasn't to be, but I wish him all the best - he made us BELIEVE again !

That "Miracle in Amsterdam" has turned out to be disaster for Spurs ! You almost wish Moura had not scored the injury-time goal against Ajax that put us into the CL final. We would have exit the CL semi final with much respect instead of going on to disgrace ourselves in the Final. I think the turning point was when Pochettino gave the interview before the CL final that he would leave Spurs if we win the CL. That seemed to have unsettled the team who never turned up for the CL final despite it being their biggest match of their career. The team never seemed to have recovered since then. Pochettino has only himself to blame for that interview. I think Pochettino is too nice and honest to be a successful manager anywhere.

Just imagine the feelings of our new players, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon now ! Lo Celso and Sessegnon have not even played much since joining us and now we will have a new manager !
I think also Celso may be vulnerable depending on the terms of his loan, Ndombele will be fine as he is streets ahead if any competition, Sessegnon will hardly get less game time than he had and may well have been a Levy signing. Any new manager knows the more he gets out of his current resources the more he will be able to spend to improve, everyone should get a fair crack of the whip (Although Sanchez might be worried if it is Mourinho given his comments about him!)

Im fairly certain Davinson came out of the Ajax/Man U game with huge credit despite the loss.

Not something I often do but I'll quote Alan Shearer's comments to the BBC:

"They say nothing should surprise you in football but it has moved really quickly.

"I was suprised by Pochettino's sacking, you would think what he has achived in the five years - turning them into regular top-four contenders and visitors to the knock-out stages of the Champions League - that he would have something in the bank, that he would be given a few months to turn things around.

"Mourinho has been waiting for a big job and now has got one. He has big boots to fill to try and better what Pochettino has done. The Argentine may not have won a trophy by the way that Pochettinho delivered his football and that Champions League final was very special and will live with Spurs fans for many years.

This is Poch's legacy: "Mourinho has been waiting for a big job and now has got one". He's changed the perception of the club. The key is making this a permanent change and there were signs of it slipping. He will leave with his reputation intact and us fans will either remember him for a golden era or the beginning of the new Spurs. Either way he will become a club legend.

Perhaps it would have been better if he had left after the CL final. I'd have been devastated at the time, with that following the defeat, but perhaps it was time. Poch gave the impression that this was the end of a project and he said he was ready for something new. Levy's inability to offer the resources to build a new project and Poch's frustration should have been recognised. I would have loved Poch being able to turn things around but a continuation of recent form (going back to last Christmas, a few Champions League games excepted) would have tarnished his legacy. This way both can move on.

He's given me some of my best memories as a Spurs fan.

I've had my criticisms of him, often feeling like I'm hitting a brick wall with them on here. I found some of his comments baffling. I feel like he was screwed to some extent by Levy (I know this won't go down on what is generally a board that can see no wrong with Levy). But perhaps it was just time, perhaps it was the end of the cycle.

I wish him all of the best in his career. He'll undoubtedly be thinking this morning how quickly football can change. 6-12 months ago, he'd turned down two of the biggest jobs in world football to stay with us. He was leading us to another top 4 finish and the CL final. And now he's out of the job. Incredible turnaround.

I'm sure he'll do very well in his next job (unless its at Real, he'd be eaten alive there).

I will say though that I found some of the recent comments about him on here very disrespectful. Yes he flirted with other clubs before (though imo to give himself some leverage). But he has done an incredible job for us. There is no need to be disrespectful or bitter towards him at all.

I will always have a soft spot for him. I hope he is the Ranieri and Mourinho the...well Mourinho in the next phase of this club.

Amen brother, i know we disagree about out beloved leader Levy but that is a great post and sums up everything.

City away last season was a majestic game to be at
When we battered Chelsea 5-3 over the new year when they won the league was outstanding
The city win at home when Lamela scored late to seal a big win
The CL wins at Wembley

And Ajax away... simply the craziest and best night I’ve ever seen and I’ve been going for 38 years since I was 5

yeah we didn’t win a trophy but fudge me I enjoyed that journey

He had a brilliant and enjoyable 4 years.

Then a weak and dull last year.

Thanks for the first 4 years, but it was clearly time for change.
