Dele Alli

I really don't get how or why Keane or Souness's comments can be called 'racist'...sometimes you have to wonder what the person bringing this up out of nowhere is actually thinking...

There is plenty of ACTUAL racism in football at present to comment on without somehow linking a player dip being questioned on, perhaps, too much off-the field sponsorship-related stuff being linked to "casual racism"..ridiculous assertion...

Looks to me like he's trying, but brick out of confidence. Should be benched, and bought back into a winning team, or against easy cup opposition. Same for Winks.

Agree.

Saw it summed up pretty well elsewhere. He's had an injury ravaged year and is trying to play his way back into form in a struggling side. Thats not easy and will take time. Last 2 games before yesterday he scored and played a decent role in a 5-0 win. His return to form is not going to be a straight line upwards and I wouldn't judge him too much on an away day to one of the best teams around at the moment. Would also be good if he could get a run in the side behind Kane - would benefit Kane also imo.

I've said this before he should get a load of dvd's of Frank Lampard scoring career,why...his career started with a bang but can you remember his career dipping as long as Ali has...never,his scoring record is there to be seen, timing of getting in the box shooting at the right time....if there wasn't this Chelsea/Tottenham thing and their transfer ban Chelsea would pay what ever Tottenham would ask for him. I'm not sure what has happened ,perhaps getting a new contract worth 100k + a week,at his age,his social life and maybe sitting on his arse playing fortitude for 16 hours a day maybe ...

I thought he may have picked up in the last few games but yesterday again game just drifted by again....

If Lampard had been moved to center mid for 2 seasons his scoring record probably would have dipped like Allis has

The black comment or any dog whistle type reference to his race is absolute assholery ...

Young footballer with brilliant talent struggling to make the next step up is not a unique story to any race/country ..

I don't believe Dele's issues have anything to do with effort or fitness

tickle my balls with a feather ( the trouble is that there are many who see racism in everything, even when its not there), Alli hit the hight's overnight and a decline in that was always likely to happen. He has too much natural talent for him not to come bouncing back and once he goes back to his best position ( behind Kane) he will show it again.

It amazes me that some fans are quick to turn their backs on players.

That's just the type lazy stereotypical stuff that gets thrown at young black players still, unfortunately
Excluding the irrelevant reference to skin tone (not a dig at you - I know what you were saying) - Keane has said nothing that many on here haven't been saying for a while.

I agree with him.
Dele needs to work out what kind of player he is and how to effect games again. It's been that way for at least a season now.

Sorry but it’s not like he has been in centre mid for every one of those games for two seasons. Admittedly a lot more last season. But even when he was there he doesn’t create and his decision making needs to improve, when to release the ball earlier, when to play a first time pass etc. When he’s not scoring or creating then he’s a bit of a luxury player. Fully accept he hasn’t been utilised in his preferred position for a lot of the time but can we not just all accept that he’s not been anywhere near as good as he can be. Not sure why that’s so hard for some to admit.

The post i quoted specifically talked about Allis form dipping for so long and linked it to his goal scoring/getting in the box in comparison to Lampard who is a player who solely played that role from the moment he became a first team player. It would have been a relevant comparison to make had Alli remained an Am/second striker and his form had dropped off how it has but goal scoring and getting in the box is not the role of a deep CMer which is where Alli has mostly been playing during the period in which his form has declined.

I miss seeing that spark (and I don't mean nasty violent streak). At this stage he just doesn't seem up to speed, you really have to earn the time to have that nonchalant air about your play otherwise it looks pretty bleak.

We'd be much better served playing N'Dombele in his position in my opinion, we've seen he actually has a drop of the shoulder and ability to get away from his man whereas Dele is playing in slow motion at times and needlessly giving the ball away time and time again..

Keane was in a police cell at the age of 28 the Tuesday before the FA Cup final.

Keane has a weird problem with Alli doing some sponsorships in social media.

This from the same guy that when assistant Ireland manager completely derailed Ireland's build up to their crucial Euro 2016 qualifiers by releasing a book days before making every press conference a Keane sideshow. The publishers rightly calculated this was the moment to get maximum publicity.
Did Man Utd go on to win that cup final?

I’m not sure that’s true about Lampard. He played as one of two in central midfield quite a few times in his career I think. He would be a brilliant player for Dele to model his game on.

I retain a lot of faith that Alli will be back, the effort he put in against Watford was more than I remember seeing when he was in his pomp. It seemed like it was the first time he’s had to try hard, he’d effortlessly gone up two leagues as a teenager, was hitting numbers beyond anything Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard were doing at the same age and waltzed into the England team.

I still think England was the start of his blip, played out of position, playing injured on a major comp. then we start playing him out of position and the injuries start to reoccur. Now he’s back the team is a very different one, especially with Eriksen missing as he was always someone he linked up well with.

so much of his game is natural but it doesn’t do any damage from deep as he’s not a passer like Eriksme (used to be) or a direct runner like Son. What he can do is take a man out with a body swerve, kill the ball and evade a tackle in the same move or arrive just as the ball is played through into the box.

we need to push him up to 10 and have Son and another to the side of him in a 4231. I don’t mind some rotation as he rediscovers his rhythm as I think he could change a game from the bench (if actually subbed on)

the england problem will remain once he gets his form back unfortunately, Sterling is always going to be played up with Kane even through their partnership effectively makes him a number 9 who will never win a header.

Ironically now he’s out of the England squad they are actually playing a 4231 with most recently Mount and Berkeley central in between Sterling and Rashford/Sancho. Would
Be perfect for Dele to ghost in.

Next off the rank for that position is probably Maddison Who managed less goals and assists than Dele last season even tho people think he was amazing and Dele under par!

What worries me most is that Poch doesn’t land on the best system for him again for ages.

Intrigues to know what you think they are down to.

Dele is a bit of a luxury player, luxury players tend to struggle in sides that are struggling.

But Dele, Eriksen, Lucas and to a lesser extent Son & Lamela all struggle from the same issue for me
- All of them are not played in a consistent position, over the last year, everyone one of them has played deep, forward, center, wide, more attacking, more defensive, left, right.
- Attacking players also overburdened with defensive duties and running back because DM area has been brick ..

It's very hard to be a young player developing their game without some consistency, get moved around, the side struggles, results go to brick, confidence goes down, a vicious circle.

The amount of attacking talent we have it is a complete disgrace that we get about 1.6 goals a game out of them

- The manager needs to help the players, stick to a setup, give players a run in a role/position, coach them
- Dele himself needs to step up his game, does he have something more than ghosting past Kane? will he start to look for the pass more (especially early passes), will he stop running into blind corners, will he take the simple option every now and then?

Dele has always reminded me of Jenas, I hope he doesn't follow the same could have been more career path.

The comments made by Souness that the senior pro's should be guiding him in training is a good one, trouble is who are those role models. Vertonghen and Alder both want out (Jan maybe but something going on there). Then next longest serving players and oldest in terms of age are Eriksen and Rose who both want out. Lloris I can't imagine roasting anyone and that then leaves Kane who to be fair I can imagine having a word with him.

You can have 10 strikers on the pitch, if you have no one to pass to them and create opportunities then you'll score 0 goals. This is the state we are often in especially if Ndombele does not start. Eriksen was previously our only serious creative option he's now persona non Grata and in awful form so it doesn't surprise me at all.

Regarding Dele I actually agreed with Carragher largely. What Dele excelled at was ghosting in and scoring, not his passing range, not his creativity which are just average. His USP is the ability to ghost in and score those secondary chances, if we aren't playing him in spaces or have changed system such that those chances aren't available then he will always struggle. He is not a great CM/Playmaker/ACM. He's an SS at his best.

I would present you early Klopp Liverpool and even current Klopp Pool at times, completely debunks the idea, in fact, they lost there most creative player and scored even more.

If you don't have creativity just concentrate on getting to the front as quickly as possible (look at Pool's passmap I posted in match thread), a very agricultural hit it wide to FB, hit it back into middle, repeat over and over. I'm not advocating hoofball but several times this Spurs side has shown (via Trippier or Toby as examples) that just getting the ball forward at tempo (vs. always trying complex/creative passes) can be just as effective.

I disagree with Carragher, Dele is Jenas, and amazing athlete with ability to run all game, can ghost, play off striker, has an eye for goal, decent pass (better than the comments suggest) can also hold his own in the middle. You watch Dele's best games (similar to Jenas) and you would never state he is an average player.

PL goals per game

Dele 0.32 (0.31 w/o pen)

Lampard 0.29 (0.23 w/o pens)
Rashford 0.26 (0.25 w/o pens)
Maddison 0.22 (0.2 w/o pens)
Lingard 0.14 (0.135 w/o pens)
Barkley 0.13 (0.12 w/o pens)

These aren't small discrepancies. I hope Poch restores him to where he belongs and that is as close to goal as possible. Just because he is good enough to play a bit deeper and has the defensive discipline doesn't mean we should be using him there. Lets get him back where he is dangerous.
