Serge Aurier

Aurier is clearly our best right back. I don't understand how anyone can seriously had an opinion to the contrary. Oh, and he was right - there is virtually no competition for the position.
If he can establish himself as a consistent performer and clear cut first choice this season that would be very good for him and us. He didn't manage that last season despite Trippier having a poor season. Both KWP and Foyth have shown promise in that position and for me it's far from as clear cut as you think. Let's see what the first half of the season brings in terms of performances and then I think we can start talking about first choice and backup options.

Aurier best right back at Spurs but consistency is required.
I do feel happier having a proper right back there now, with KWP as first under study also getting good game time to help him develop.

Aurier does have the massive ability to sod it all up again next time he plays, with successions of foul throws, daft free kicks and insane penalty concessions of course!

Fingers crossed he’s finally got it nailed, even if he’s only playing well to prove a point, or get his move back to PSG!

I'd rather that every now and again rather than every game KWP being roasted by every player he marks and being out of position. At least Aurier is actually a right back. Not even sure what KWP is.

I think KWP has a very decent career ahead of him. ‘Target the young fullback’ is hardly a new tactic and he’s not the first to be put under that pressure in his first few games. I think he’s handled it ok tbh.

I’m confident he’ll make it as a prem player, as everything that’s been written about him before he’s even got half a season under his belt, is identikit to what you’ll see if you peruse the first 20 pages of the young Harry Kane thread..... ;-)

Just his stature alone makes him the best option for the starting berth. With KWP there, we look flimsy and light weight. Aurier is stronger, harder in the tackle, more experienced and a far more solid bet. The same goes for Foyth who is certainly anything BUT solid. I think any question marks around Aurier (for me there aren't really any) - a player who was a starter for PSG - then those same questions marks hang above Foyth's head with bells on.

People level ill-discipline at Aurier, but the sheer recklessness Foyth has displayed - including the awful red card at Bournemouth last season - far exceeds anything being levelled at Serge. When you factor in that Aurier is far superior in an attacking sense too, as underlined by his crosses for goals last season against Dortmund, the few goals he has picked up himself, and the assists yesterday, then it is not even close.

IMO, unpopular as it may be, I don't think Poch is always the best and getting the most from his players. We're seeing it (again IMO) with Moura and its absolutely been the case with Serge. He's a good player, better than Trippier, but I believe he has come in for some of the weird stuff from Poch. Now is absolutely the time to get him in the team, first choice, week in & week out. He is waaaaaaay more solid than anything else we have and helps us look like more of a proper balanced team.

Maybe, maybe not. I think we can all see he is never going to be a TAA. Can't we? Maybe I'm being unfair...

Young players really do need time. I never thought Tammy Abraham had it in him but looks like he might well do. Clearly, though, Aurier is a far, far better bet at the moment than KWP. Hard to see that changing any time soon.

I agree he certainly has it in him to be our first choice right back. I have been extremely disappointed in him - until yesterday! For PSG his assist stats were amazing, but we have seen little evidence of this till yesterday. He was also supposed to be really quick - again not much evidence of this so far. Hope he goes up a gear in all respects.

Aurier and moura... Gotta feel for them.

That you had an idea of him being lighting quick, is all on you. It's never been a label he's had. He's not slow, but no Kyle walker, and he never has been.

I actually think Foyth is a lot more solid than he looks... Seems more solid than Sanchez is at times for sure...

Agree on the general thought tho.

I didn't say lightning quick. However if we bought a full back other than one with pace then that would be totally foolhardy.

Some of the criticism Aurier gets can be aimed at KWP and Foyth as well. Difference is that they're both young players and are probably more likely to improve as they gain experience.

Quite a lot of the criticism of Aurier is recognizable from his time at PSG. He's 26, starting his third season with us, and is yet to show that he can be consistent and reliable over a resizable period of time. That might come, it might not, until it does the jury remains out for me and young players with potential remain well and truly in contention.

He was decent yesterday, much more like the level we need from our full backs.

Let’s not forget though that KWP got a hat trick of assists in one game last season as well and that was dismissed as a flash in the pan, the full backs need to be measured by the same yard stick. I’m personally not getting carried away by one 7/10 performance, but would be great if he turned this one in to 30 or so going forward.

It doesn't appear insincere to me, more that he identified Aurier as his preferred option which makes sense as we did sign despite already having Trippier. He obviously sees the quality but hasn't felt he can trust his concentration and focus to enable him to stay consistent. This was a word in his ear not to rest on laurels "you did well, but I want to see you keep this level"

Thats how I saw it, and its really not unfair is it?

Ive said since we signed him Aurier has it in him to be top class, but Id be a liar if I said we had seen it with any consistency.

I thought he laid a marker Saturday, lets hope he sticks to that level (at least) and really starts to show what he has. Its his to lose at this point.
