Harry Winks

Happy birthday Harry... you are a true gem!

Can't fathom that some posters were almost belittling him some posts back. He's become the metronome of the team and with someone shielding his back he's become even more effective in the past three matches. He was outstanding again today and to my mind, he should have been awarded man of the match

Very good game, again. The midfield anchor role will be difficult for Dier and Wanyama to claim back.

He's not suited to the anchor role. Indeed today, Sissoko was constantly dropping back, covering Harry's movement and actually allowing him to play 10 yards higher than normal, level with Eriksen

winks does not impress me. carries the ball to hold possession well, but very little end result. good squad player but not an automatic starter if we are looking to win every game.

Have to also add that he is part of a team which currently has more points than any other Spurs side in PL history and was injured for about 6 weeks. I think he is an integral part of everything good that we're doing.

Nah sorry mate but respectfully disagree.

These last few games where we’ve been down to the bare bones he’s stepped up.

He receives the ball turns and drives us forward. He’s young and developing into a really nice player. Homegrown and one of our own too!

Completely disagree. For me it's his best position.

Other players dropping deeper when either a midfielder or defender moves higher up the pitch is only how it's supposed to be.

Did you think he anchored the midfield in the second half against Watford? Wasn't a bad half of football from us, or Winks.

His end product isn't his strength that's true. That's part of why I think the anchor role is his best position, for now at least. I haven't seen many on here complain about Dier or Wanyama lacking end result, because they're seen as more traditional defensive midfielders. I don't think a lot of end result should be expected from a player anchoring the midfield, most of what he does should be fairly low risk. Bit finding players who can deliver assists or penetration in the final third, that is his job and I think he does it well.

Against sides that just want to sit in and defend, Winks as the 'anchor man' makes sense.

Winks and Sissoko have been a surprisingly good combination in midfield for us this season.

I think he's gonna need to look at his game and future role come the summer. Assuming Eriksen leaves, we will be reshaping the midfield and Winks can either make a claim for the #8 role or look to pin down the DM spot as he has so far this season. I personally think he's still got a bit to learn on the defensive side of the game, but nothing unachievable. Like @metalgear, I want to see more of him going forward though I accept his current position requires him to hold himself back. More like what he did against Fulham would be something to convince me that he can push into the CM role.

He's still developing. Defensively, I think he needs to upgrade his tackling. He's there, but not imposing and gets drawn in and passed by too often. Nevertheless, in that role, better than Dier who seems to be lumbering about following the ball.

For me, Wanyama one and a half seasons ago, has them both on toast.
He's great defensively, but very limited (and limiting) when we have the ball. He'd be perfect in a Mourinho team and he's great to bring on when we're trying to shut down a game, but I want more from a modern midfielder.

I still think we're at our best in a 4-2-3-1 with two passers in the middle - Dier and Dembele were as good as we've had, Winks in Dembele's place would work well.

I'd expect Dier to play alongside him when Poch is able to pick from his best players again.
Probably. But both Winks and Sissoko have been playing well. I think they've done enough to where Dier or Wanyama will have to perform at good form to be guaranteed a place in the team.

I really think Winks brings something different as the anchor. Less solid defensively, but moves the ball so much better than Dier and Wanyama. I still want to see a return to a midfield trio of Eriksen, Winks and Alli with three front players (or two with a back 5) when we get players back, though I expect Pochettino sees it differently.

Ossie? Is that you?

On the other hand, Winks needs to develop his own style too. Not sure if he is like just obeying instructions and not having the mindset to take some risks or experiment, however that's exactly what I think he needs to do to break through to the next level.
