Denis Cheryshev

Gutter Boy

Tim Sherwood
So someone, usually Liverpool or West Ham, tends to buy all the crap players who have a few fluke performances at the WC.

So how about Denis Cheryshev as our new WF/CF. He looks skillful, quick, strong and can finish. £40m seems the new £15m, so how about it?

Mm sounds like an other Nico Claesen

Nico was decent player, the problem for him was it was the time when we played only one striker who happened to have the season of his life.
Was he a striker?
I went to loads of games that season but don’t remember him playing ... but remember the name well

Yes he was, once Pleat changed our system he has Nico playing more from M/F which was not his game at all. Then TV took over ( after Pleat)and for whatever reason he did not rate him and sold him to Chelsi.

Pity really because he had a lot of pace and he always looked good, but Allen was better that season and Nico was left out or as i said played further back.

How many Russian players have been a success? Pav did ok, but Arshavin was his times Arnautovic. Occasionally good, but largely not. Cheats had a couple, including Zhirkov, who were massive flops.

Arnautovic is Austrian.

I agree with the sentiment though, kanchelskis the only stand out player from Russia, I’d say the others and the couple of Ukrainians all failed to live up to their expectations. (I loved Pav’s purple patch for us btw)

I know Arnautovic is Austrian. I was referring to what type of player Arshavin was.

How many players signed off the back of a World Cup are a success?

Cuadrado at Chelsea was a good example after the last World Cup.

Brilliant in the tournament, made no impression in London.

(Just looking at wiki and I see Salah on loan was part of that deal with fiorentina- haha!)

I can't think of a good one. Didn't we sign Popescu and Dumitrescu on the back of a WC? Neither were really a success for us.
Diouf was on the back of a WC, he had a decent career in the PL.

Popescu was actually too much of a success, and quickly got tapped up by Barcelona

Radicchio at West Ham was the funniest world cup signing flop. And Liverpool signed a load of really terrible Senegalese players. I remember we nearly bought Alexi Lalas off the back of a tournament.

I don't remember Popescu being anything out of the ordinary for us, and was a bit meh when he went to Barcalona.
