Summer 2018 transfer thread

I'm not against signing him. I just think he'd initially take Nkoudou's/Llorente's spot in the pecking order, rather than being someone we'd sell proven performers like Son or Lamela to accommodate

I think Martial will be an awesome signing. He was good under LVG, not so good under Jose, but still clearly has bucket loads of talent. And I think compared to Son, as much as I love him, he still has the tendency to make the simple thinks look difficult. He's getting better, but I still am not totally confident he'll score the easy chances.

With Martial, I think he is a huge natural talent, and played in an attacking team with a manager that knows how to develop young players, he would kill it with us.

People have this strange idea that Martial hasn't been good for United. If you look at this chart, you'll see how excellent he was this season (and how good Sonny is as well). He's basically in there with all the elite attackers in the Prem, even though he's younger than all of them bar Jesus, played in a pretty defensive team, and almost never played central striker (which he obv wouldn't for us).

I think if we're gonna spend big money on an attacker this summer (which I'm not 1000% sure we need), he'd be at the top of my list. To me, he's miles ahead of Zaha, Jay Rodriguez, or any other Prem-based attacker we've been linked with (idk about the continent-based players).

I'd also be excited about the signing, b/c Martial has obviously been on Poch's list for the last few years, and it'd be great to see Daniel get Poch one of his main targets.

I love ‘expected assists’ as a stat. But surely ‘expected goals’ is a worse indicator of performance than ‘goals’? It shows how much they’re getting goalscoring opportunities, but not how well they’re taking them...

Wow, yes! 2001!

And even he was out of contract, so technically was a free agent when he joined us - no fee.

Still can’t think of a player we’ve actually ‘bought’ ie had to negotiate with them and agree a fee.

I saw us linked today to Depay, which caught me a little by surprise. He was on my 'please sign' list before the Utd move. I know it was Dutch football but his highlights reel was bloody ridiculously good. I thought he'd do better over here.

How has he been doing in France?

He's been doing very good at Lyon. Apparently one of the main reasons they finished so high. Still, it's the French league. Maybe that is his level.

I still find it funny that people think Martial is better than Son. The grass is always greener and that... I bet everyone at United would bite our hands off for a straight swap. Son 47 in 139 over 3 seasons, Martial 36 in 136 over 3 seasons
And how do Martial’s last 3 year stats compare to Lamela’s?

Who's even talking about replacing Son with Martial anyway? It's about strengthening the squad and giving us more options - if we're able to sign players of the calibre of Martial instead of the likes of N'jie and N'koudou then we're in a good position

Exactly. If he's going to replace any established player it'd be Lamela. For the roles behind the CF, Eriksen and Dele are first choice, Son has done incredibly for the last couple years so is 3rd choice and Moura has just arrived

Llorente is who he'd probably be replacing but with the bonus of being able to fill the positions behind too.

Shame The Swans were relegated, they may have taken Llorente back. What a waste of money he’s been.

As a regular I still think he has a lot to offer a lower table club. Maybe we’ll sell him with some performance related fees to one of them.

I think that he'd be fine at most places if he's playing week in week out.

He might do a good job for Stoke?

They got relegated too no? Relegated teams should be looking to rebuild with younger up and coming player rather than expensive PL ones, you'd guess.

Any of the teams who finsihed 7th (Burnley) through to 17th (Southampton) could use him. Could be an astute signing for Saudi Sportswashing Machine @Greg put a word in :)

I could see Bruce going for him if Villa beat Fulham this afternoon

I hope they do. Could be an interesting match. Lots of back stories...Onomah probably on the bench? Ryan whoever. Foolham run by an anti-Levy tycoon who wants to buy Wembley and undermine Levy's WHL USP.
