Ajax transfer opens the door for Spurs to sign Matthijs de Ligt
Young defender is high on Tottenham's wishlist this summer

Matthijs de Ligt - a name constantly linked with Tottenham.

Interest in the talented teenager surfaced last month and Spurs have been tracking him for some time.

Despite being just 18 years old, de Ligt has been an ever-present for Ajax this season and became the youngest ever captain in Dutch professional football when he donned the armband for the Eredivisie side back in January.

Spurs have good history in dealing with the Dutch giants, with Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen all making successful moves to north London in recent years.

That will give the north Londoners the edge when it comes to negotiations against the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona for his signature.

And a move to Spurs has moved closer with Ajax reportedly close to bringing in de Ligt's replacement.

The Eredivisie runners-up are on the verge of tying up a deal for Lisandro Magallan having reached an agreement with Boca Juniors for the 24-year-old defender.

Magallan is expected to be unveiled as an Ajax player in the next 48 hours and that will open the door for de Ligt to make the move to the Premier League.

Fact or fiction? The truth about those Matthijs de Ligt and Spurs transfer rumours
Spurs have been linked with Ajax's talented Dutch teenager

Speculation has abounded this week that Tottenham Hotspur are battling for the signature of Ajax's teen sensation Matthijs de Ligt, but what is fact and what's fiction?

football.london first reported Tottenham's interest in the 18-year-old early last month, earmarking him as a potential summer transfer target to add to Mauricio Pochettino's growing brood of Europe's finest young players.

Now reports from Italy have claimed that Spurs have had a £48m bid accepted for De Ligt only for Emirates Marketing Project to come in with a £52.5m offer that has also been accepted.

Some follow up stories have claimed that Tottenham must now submit a new bid to replace the already accepted bid in order to match City's offer.

It all seems a bit messy, so what is actually happening with Tottenham Hotspur and the young Netherlands international?

football.london understands that while Spurs are interested in De Ligt, the club have not yet made a move for the talented teenage defender.

Spurs have been tracking the situation with the player for some time. De Ligt has been an ever-present for Ajax this season despite his age and became the youngest ever captain in Dutch professional football when he donned the armband for the Eredivisie side back in January.

Having had success in reuniting another former Ajax central defensive pairing in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, Tottenham have considered the De Ligt/Sanchez reunion as a potential pairing for the long-term future at the club.

But the club is not currently active in talks for the young defender, with any deal for De Ligt this summer likely to be influenced by whatever happens with Alderweireld.

De Ligt has caught the attention of many of Europe's top clubs in recent seasons though, with Barcelona among those who have considered a move for the young Dutchman.

Tottenham had earmarked him as a potential summer transfer this summer and do hold a number of cards when it comes to luring the centre-back to north London.

Spurs have De Ligt's former centre-back partner Davinson Sanchez among their ranks. The 21-year-old Colombian has starred in his first season in the Premier League and was rewarded with a new six-year deal last week for his efforts.

Talks over a new contract for the Belgian came to a standstill earlier this season. It is believed that Spurs put an offer of around £130,000 a week on the table for the Belgian, but his representatives were asking for closer to £180,000 a week.

The 29-year-old's current deal runs out next summer, but Tottenham have an option to extend it by another year to 2020. However, by doing so they activate a clause that means the Belgian can be sold before the final two weeks of the 2019 summer transfer window if a bid comes in for £25m.

Alderweireld was hampered by a serious hamstring injury last season but could not break back into the team after he returned to full fitness, with just three Premier League starts in 2018.

The defender, who was named in Belgium's provisional squad for the World Cup on Monday morning, is a person of interest for both PSG and Manchester United and is expected to move on this summer, with Tottenham believed to be looking for around £55m for his signature.

Spurs would be loathed to sell another player to a rival Premier League club after last summer's sale of Kyle Walker to Emirates Marketing Project, but one possible scenario where a deal could be allowed to happen is if Anthony Martial were to head in the opposite direction.

Pochettino is an admirer of the 22-year-old Frenchman - Spurs made moves to try to sign the attacker before he left Monaco for United in 2015 - and the player is believed to be keen on a move to London to reignite his career under the Argentine despite interest from Juventus.

Martial missed out on France's World Cup squad following a season with just 18 Premier League starts under Jose Mourinho.

With Pochettino expected to sign a new deal at Tottenham in the coming days, the club are attempting to tie up their transfer deals earlier this summer in order to get the new players into the club and involved in the Argentine's pre-season training in early July.

There is a feeling that the late addition of new signings in recent seasons has been one potential cause behind the club's slow start to the last three seasons, meaning they were always playing catch-up from then on and Tottenham are looking to address that this summer.

Pep Guardiola is monitoring Ajax’s highly-rated 18-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt as a potential long-term replacement for Vincent Kompany.

De Ligt fits the profile of a young, technically astute defender who could slot into City’s playing style. The centre-back is experienced at the highest level having started last May’s Europa League final defeat to Manchester United in Stockholm. De Ligt also played the entirety of Netherland’s 1-0 defeat to England in Amsterdam in March and, in total, has made 34 appearances in all competitions this season. That follows last year’s debut campaign that featured 22 games, including an international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria.

It is understood that before deciding to firm up his interest in the player, Guardiola will assess how much game time De Ligt may get given he already has Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Kompany as frontline centre-backs.

Despite a strong finish to the season, Kompany only managed to play in eight of City’s final 14 games due to the fragility of his physique, and he remains an ongoing injury concern for Guardiola. The captain is also entering the final year of his contract, and while he may be considered for an extension there are no guarantees.

Speaking about Kompany’s future earlier this week, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, City’s chairman, said: “I know how hard it’s been for him physically but also mentally. But he’s a leader with an unbelievable personality to handle these challenges. The way he’s come back, the last two months of the season, he’s been arguably the best defender in the world.”

Bold is what I was saying the other day. He's got to be really sure on De Ligt to decide to prioritize him ahead of Otamendi, Laporte and Stones. De Ligt isn't going to want to be a Foyth for them, he's going to want to play like Sanchez did. I think we have a good shot if we want him.

May not be a popular choice, but if De Ligt went to City, I'd come in with a decent offer for John Stones. Even without De Ligt, he struggled to get on the pitch once Laporte came, and I think he could be a brilliant defender with JVT and Sanchez next to him.

Yep, not a bad shout. Wonder if he has the requisite concentration and aggression that Poch would look for, but there has to be a player in there somewhere.

I’ve yet to see Stones play a game in which I have been impressed by him.

I'd be a little concerned if De-Ligt is our idea of being brave, outside of just the cost

- Does any team in the top 10 have a CB under 20 starting?
- Am I missing something or is he another Foyth? not quite a TA replacement

As for the Stones comments, please fudge no … Dier is 10X the CB that Stones is

I spot a teensy-weensy exaggeration there.
Dier is ....OK 'ish

Have you seen De Ligt play? He's fantastic! Better than Sanchez. His passing is excellent. He can ping it better than Toby, and can advance with the ball like a boss. He's exceptional for his age, and good compared to any age.
