UEFA further ruining what's already a shambles.

Starting next season the top 4 nations will have 4 direct places in the CL group stage. We can't risk those 4th placed clubs getting knocked out and what a shame that Italian football had declined to the point where Germany robbed them of one spot. Never mind, that's been sorted.

The two nations ranked 5th and 6th will only get two places each and 7th to 10th will get one place. That means that the champions of the 42 (I think) other associations will have FOUR places to fight over. The remaining four will go to the winners of the previous season's CL and EL and two of the second and third placed sides from nations ranked 5th to 15th.

Spain, England, Germany, Italy (16 places)
France, Russia (4 places)
Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey (4 places)

If the CL holders have qualified through their domestic league, the Czech champions (the 11th ranked nation) will go directly to the group stage.

If the EL holders have qualified through their domestic league, the third placed side from the fifth placed nation (France) will go directly to the group stage. o_O

The EL will now have a separate qualifying for clubs eliminated from the CL champions route.

There will be an additional round of qualifying games to make all this work.

The CL will now have the same kick off times as the EL. 18.55 CET and 21.00 CET.

FFS. Kick offs when the civilised parts of the world are still at work is one of the things that makes the wafer cup so fudging ridiculous. Why let that rot spread to their good competition?

I like the 6pm EL matches; if you're watching TV, walk straight from work to the pub; if you're at an away game, plenty of time for a drink after the match.
I can't remember us having a home EL tie at 6pm? Think that's for matches that are in eastern Europe?

The next step is to let certain teams in on "merit" if they fail to qualify. Make it a real closed shop.
this was seriously being pushed was it not : http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/35864399

Q: It's almost as if he's suggesting it could have been worse.

A: "Worse" depends on your point of view. Some of the things that were discussed at the request of the clubs would have made the Champions League an even more lucrative competition.

We're talking about wild-card entries for historically big clubs who fail to qualify; this year, for example, think Milan, Manchester United and Liverpool, who have 15 European Cups between them.

Just an other way of making sure the rich get richer and keeping the rest in their place, totally against fair competition.

There's no way I can make a 6pm match either at home or in the pub. Most people I know finish work at 6pm and then have a commute too.

The 6pm kick offs for the away games would be better for me based on experience of how hammered I got in the 2 hours before kick off in Leverkusen last season

The bottle of jager I brought and was drinking meant I literally do not recall one moment from the game all I remember is getting a cab back to the airport afterwards and somehow getting through security and on the plane after being the drunkest turd ever

More changes announced today.

Fourth sub in extra time.

Players who change clubs in January will no longer be cup tied. Clubs can register three new players for the knockout rounds with no restrictions.

For the CL, EL and Super Cup finals 12 players can be named on the bench.

Teams which have won the UEFA Europa League (or previously the UEFA Cup) three consecutive times or a minimum of five times may also wear a multiple-winner badge on the shirt sleeve. The only team entitled to wear this badge next season would be Sevilla FC, who have won the competition five times (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016).

The CL group stage will have two Tuesday and two Wednesday matches kick off at 18.55 CET. All the other matches will kick off at 21.00 CET.

Thank you Jordan. Interesting. More subs than actual players on the pitch! Where will this end, 25 subs? We're gonna need a bigger bench.

Let's hope Spurs are affected by this ruling.

So basically bragging rights for former winners, adjusted kick offs to please TV interests, and a few minor tweaks to make sure rich clubs can make better use of their inflated squads, reducing the risk of embarrasing and costly upsets. No surprises there.

Pep will probably still only name 7 subs if City reach the final though.

With the change of times i presume this stops clubs rearranging league games at an early time, pinching tv time and viewers off the clubs that are in the Champs League.

Was surprised that rule wasn't challenged or at least a small change enabling clubs are able to play league games from the quarter final stage onwards.

UEFA is petrified of a "super league" breakaway , these changes reflect their anxiety, its about time we had an additional match to watch, playing all the group stage matches at the same time unless they were in Putin-land didnt make much sense.

Entire squad available for use and sub in and out at will, have specialists for freekicks and penalties. That's where it's heading.

The NFL have three game windows on a Sunday, if you are so inclined you can watch 9 hours of live games for the first 18 weeks of the season, it’s great.

It’s obviously partly to do with time zones but we have a range in Europe too.
