    Dier 8
    Vertonghen 8
    Walker 8
    Bentaleb 7.5
    Mason 7
    Dembele 7
    Lamela 7
    Eriksen 7.5
    Kane 9

    No way!!

Lloris – 9 (two worldclass saves, especially off Wellbeck)
    Rose 8
Dier 9 (Was petrified to see him drafted in the NLD but he was simply outstanding)
    Vertonghen 8
Walker 9 (looked like a thoroughbred sprinting ahead to the finish line
Bentaleb 8 (Outstanding, especially considering he is back from the ACN)
Mason 8 (irrepressible; what he lacks in technique he makes up for in desire)
    Dembele 7
    Lamela 7
    Eriksen 8 (Constant probing)
Kane 10 – what else could we ask for from our HERO!!!

Milo, the automatic filter insertion of the 5-1 bit in 'Ar5ena1' is messing up any web links with Ar5ena1 in the title. Even your own match ratings. :p

    Thanks. Fixed now

Mason doesn't lack in technique, he just tries more higher risk passes, which is part of what makes him so good

  4. A magnificent team performance all round, hence the high ratings

Lloris 9 – stood no chance with Ozil's volley but his two critical saves capped an excellent display

Walker 8 – possibly at fault losing Ozil for their goal but was trying to cover down the middle; overall this was Walker getting right back to his best
Dier 9 – not only stopped everything they could throw at him but also produced a series of quality forward passes from the back
Vertonghen 9 – one word: commanding!
Rose 8 – okay he completely lost Welbeck for their goal but some of his tackling was King-esque, also posed a considerable threat going forward and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions

Mason 9 – that impressive ht touch-map graphically illustrated his influence all round the park
Bentaleb 8 – slotted in seamlessly following his ACoN sojourn
Dembele 8 – supported the front-line well overall, needs to release early more often

Lamela 8 – seems to be learning when not to take on one too many at last
Eriksen 8 – not at his best but still put in a shift

Kane 10 – even the neutrals cannot help loving our new Bale

    Subs

    Chadli 7
    Stambouli n/a
    Paulinho n/a

    Manager

Pochetinno 10 – his three-pronged strategy outflanked even the wily Wenger: press high, get the ball forward early, shoot on spec.

  5. Lloris – 8 – Two big saves in the second half. Excellent.

Walker – 8 – How we missed him in the first half of the season. Solid defensive performance, good pace on the right wing too

Dier – 9 – Had gone off the boil a little since the first few weeks of the season, but this is why he was so highly rated. Flawless defensive performance.

Vertonghen – 8 – Calm, composed, solid. Good man.

Rose – 7 – Got skinned by Welbeck for their goal, and still crosses like Aaron Lennon on coke. But generally had a very good game going forward and especially in defence, winning some big tackles.

Mason – 9 – Full of energy, an all action performance. Kane will dominate the headlines, but Mason was just as good IMO. Another die hard Spurs fan thrown in the middle of a NLD and working his cobblers off.

Bentaleb – 8 – Very composed in possession, and a superb ball to Kane for the winner. Great to have him back!

Dembele – 8 – Much better in the advanced role. Pressed Arsenal hard and started a few attacks. If he could pass the ball a bit better and use his right foot he'd be genuinely world class.

Eriksen – 8 – No goals or assists today, but still plenty of creative passing, dribbling and skills. A pleasure to watch.

Lamela – 5 – The only disappointment today. Missed a good chance to score and gave the ball away a lot, again. Worked hard to win it back though.

Kane – 9 – Two chances, two goals. Oh, and he held the ball up and brought others into play well too.

    Subs:

Chadli – 7 – Looked decent when he came on.

    Paulinho + Stambouli – N/A

Pochettino – 11 – This is why he was my first choice to replace Sherwood. Completely outplayed one of the best and most in forms teams in the country. Our players looked fitter, sharper and hungrier than Arsenal. Big calls to bring back Dier and Bentaleb, both paid off fantastically. Substitutions were on time and correct. Full marks and more

  6. Lloris – 7.5. Didn't have much to do, couldn't help the gal, one good save
Walker – 8. Had Ozil in his pocket all game (except the goal :) ); thought he wa fantastic
Dier – 8. Still raw, but I think he was brilliant, solid, didn't let the occasion phase him, good speed.
Jan – 8 – The usual from an amazing defender.
Rose – 7 – had some great moments, but still feel he's too weak positionally, and he got absolutely destroyed by Welbeck for their goal
Bentaleb – 8.5 – Fantastic performance today, incredible assist.
Mason – 7 – Awful first half, much better second half.
Lamela – 7 – I love his work ethic, his pressing, his tackling. When his attacking game clicks he'll be special. But it really isn't at the minute.
Eriksen – 7.5 – Quiet game for him, but still a great performance, some lovely play and vision
Dembele – 7 – Not quite up to his recent standards but his ability is clear. Didn't realise he was that left footed though that he cut back twice with two great right foot chances.
Kane – 9 – Nothing needs to be said. I didn't think he could ever be this good. i didn't think he could keep it going, but he just keeps it going. What's really incredible about hi though, isn't justice goals, but his hold up play, his technique is infinitely improved and also this ability to always get a shot off when he's surrounded

  7. Gutter Boy

Mason doesn't lack in technique, he just tries more higher risk passes, which is part of what makes him so good

Come off it – yes he undoubtedly does try higher risk passes (which is why I like him), but he also doesn't have good accuracy – he often gives the ball away even with low risk passes.

Shocked to see him getting such high ratings – thought Bentaleb was clearly better defensively, had more of a threat and end product going forward and gave the ball away less.

  8. Surprised no one is giving Dembele higher ratings. Along with Bentaleb and Mason I thought he dominated the midfield and held the ball up high up the pitch fantastically. He so rarely lost it and gave us several good oppurtunties. Easily an 8 for me.

  9. Disco

Surprised no one is giving Dembele higher ratings. Along with Bentaleb and Mason I thought he dominated the midfield and held the ball up high up the pitch fantastically. He so rarely lost it and gave us several good oppurtunties. Easily an 8 for me.

It's because Dembele holds onto it too long; we make a flowing move up the pitch, get all the way to Dembele… then he is forced onto his right foot so he can't do anything, has to turn inside, gets crowded, turns back and lays it off, and the momentum is gone. You could perceive this as holding the ball up high up the pitch, or lacking the vision to lay a pass off for someone to get in on goal.

I was pleased he did take on a right foot shot in the second half, and it VERY nearly sneaked in, or got followed in by Kane.

  10. And a view from the other side …

    No point singling players out,

    Ospina was ****.
    Bellerin was ****.
    Mertesacker was ****.
    Koscielny was ****.
    Coquelin was ****.
    Ramsey was ****.
    Cazorla was ****.
    Özil was ****.
    Welbeck was ****.
    Giroud was ****.

  11. Lloris 8.5 two world class saves
    Rose 8.5 brilliant all day
    Dier 8 excellent
Vertonghen 7.5 very good but partly at fault for goal
Walker 7.5 his pace looked back to full tilt today
Bentaleb 9 brilliant everywhere heart of our side and great assist to Kane
Mason 8 very good display kept us moving forward
Dembele 7 he was very good at times but again in the final third his decision making lets him down
Eriksen 7 not his best display but great effort
Lamela 6 worked very hard and had some great pieces of defending but toothless going forward
Kane 10 what more can you say superstar

  12. Bullet

Usually I'd 100% agree and I think that's what's limiting him moving that crucial step up. Today though, I think he layed the ball off when he had the option.

  13. LLoris 8 A couple of outstanding saves again

Walker 9 Sorry if I am repeating myself, but we are a class above with him in the team. Instrumental.

Vertonghen 8 When he is playing like this, seems like nothing can go wrong

    Dier 7 Solid

Rose 7 Obviously loses a point for losing Welbeck, but that happens. Great going forward and stayed strong

Bentaleb 8 Plays with his heart. Good ball for Kane too.

Mason 8 Seems to lose the ball at times but thats because he gets it so often. Gave everything.

    Dembele 8 Beast

Eriksen 6 I remember saying at half time that he had been terrible. He improved second half. Needs to improve delivery.

Lamela 7 Busy and gave everything but needs to do better in key positions to become the player he can be.

Kane 9 Seemed to be an off day but as big players do, he came with two aazing strikers goals.

  14. Lamela was very busy today but nothing came off for him he was good and worked hard but nothing more I thought 6 was a fair rating maybe 6.5. Encouraging thing is that was my lowest rated player and if that player is still at a 6 or 6.5 we are in great shape!

  15. GrimsbyYid

How was he bad in the first half?

  16. Ha, no I didn't see the heat map. Because I was actually there watching.

The first half for me exemplified why I don't like him. Gives the ball away far far far too much. Stoke are filled with players with fight and heart and puts a tackle in, I just don't see these making a great player on their own. I want him to be a much better passer of the ball, I want him to be far more creative with his pass (though occassionally he does do this) and I want him to be far better in attack than he is.

  17. I think people are missing the point with their "critical" ratings

Watched the game again, yes some individual errors (not that many), a few more opportunities we could have taken and won the game early.

But .. big but, not even for a 5 minute period of that game was the Scum on the offensive, I cannot recall a Spurs team dominating even a mediocre level PL team for the full 94 minutes like we did against them, if they had got anything out of that game, it would have been a complete mugging.

Well done, game won, won well, with style and completely outplayed the opposition, everyone contributed ..

And fudge me, we are a fit team

  18. Jordinho

We are a TEAM. You could have someone put in a better individual performance without it benefiting the team at all.

I think the Chelsea ratings thread had a similiar feeling for me, we put five past the team top of the league in a hugely entertaining game but then come here to slag off certain players. We conceded three then so maybe it could be understood but for yesterday it was such a great team performance that it would be truly sad and harsh to single anyone out for silly things or agendas.

  19. Lloris – 8.5 fudge all to do for the vast majority of the game, apart from 1 world class save from Welbeck, and another good one from another of the c**ts. No chance with their goal. Distribution excellent and safe hands all dayy long. WORLD CLASS KEEPER.

Walker – 9. I thought he was absolutely superb, maybe his best game in a Spurs shirt. Up for it from the get-go, won every single 50-50, fudge me he won 70-30 duels!!! His pace was frightening, his runs forward were STORMING, absolutely destroyed the Scum full back.
Dier – 8.5. Imperious all game long.
    Vertonghen – 8.5.. Ledley-esque.
Rose – 8.5. Done for their goal a bit but other than that, excellent all game. Love his fight. Very good going forward unlucky not to get an assist or goal.

Bentaleb – 9. Ran the show. Is going to be a top class stalwart of our CM for years to come. Future captain too IMO.
Mason – 8.5. See the above. Love his progressive passing and his real desire to get on the ball. Did Woolwich have a CM in this game??? Ramsey or roosterelin or some brick?!?! Nah they didn't – these two Spurs Academy lads absolutely bossed them THE WHOLE GAME.

Lamela – 8.5. One of his best games in a Spurs shirt. I don't understand some people giving him 6s. Thought this kid showed an absolutely EXEMPLARY work rate and commitment to EVERY challenge. From a 'fancy dan' £30 million import from Argentina too – not who you would expect on paper. At times the crowd visibly reacted to his fight…. and on the ball stuff, committed Scum players,, used the ball intelligently, great corner for our first goal. The goals will follow from him, although I do think he'll be more Willian than Hazard in terms of end product (if that makes sense).
Dembele – 8.5. Oh my days. He bossed the Scum team every time they came near him. Such a beast physically. And obviously – all the repetoire of tekkers came out especially towards the end. Touch, dribbling, feints, flicks – Mousa retains the ball a bit like Iniesta and that is not hyperbole. Got int good dangerous positions all gme, committed their players, OCCASIONALLY did slow our play down a bit when we came up against their packed defense, but i thought he countered really well.
Eriksen – 8. Played well in an understated way, lots of nice touches and good passes. I like the tactic of moving him central as the game goes on.

Harry Kane – 9. Running out of stuff to say about Hurrikane. His usual self basically, hence the 9. 1st goal great anticipation like a true goal scorer and 2nd goal was just… a Shearer-esque header, simples.

    subs:
Chadli – 8. Good running, good impact.

Poch – 10. I love Pochettino, it's about as simple as that. Philsophy and system is coming through strong now and I love just how he's really built a team dynamic.
Fans – 100,000,000 – best atmosphere since the 5-1 in the LC

Scum – sh*t team, sh*t fans, **** back to Woolwich

  20. Can we just ban whoever it is who gives everyone a 1 for every game?

    Lloris – 8
    Walker – 9
    Dier – 8
    Vertonghen – 8
    Rose – 9
    Bentaleb – 9
    Mason – 9
    Lamela – 8
    Eriksen – 8
    Kane – 10
    All subs – 7

The only way to do that would be to make people sign into Google in order to submit a response. I have held off doing that because I thought that it would put some people off responding.

I was one of those who gave him a 6 on the Google forms thing. Watching it live (on BT), I thought his main contribution was as an annoyance to Arsenal when they had possession. I watched it again and noticed some positive contributions, like the corner (d'oh!), plus some lung busting runs to get back in defence when Arsenal were countering.

I think when evaluating Lamela we have to compare him, as you suggest, more to Willian than Hazard. Paying £25mln for a Trevor Hockey-type player (ask your grandfather) is a bit steep, and he obviously has the potential to be a lot better than just a hard-pressing midfielder; a few goals would certainly go a long way to override the biased opinion of him I seem to have developed.

So, definitely worth a 7 in my book (though the tempation was to give them all 11, in true Nigel Tufnell style)

  24. Rorschach

    Dembele missing in that list.

Fortunately he didn't do so on the pitch! ;) …got an 8 from me too – most of the 8s were 8.5 in my mind – Lloris for example pulled off a couple of stunning saves but was nowhere near the performance he was required to put in against wet broom for example.

Yeah fair point – we can see it's clearly an anomaly so no big deal… With the lack of response we get for certain games we don't want even less!

I'm very happy to see Lamela doing his Trevor Hockey impression atm because for too long he's been trying to look like he's the next Lionel Messi.

It's plain for all to see that unlike Hockey, Eric has genuine talent, oodles of it, but that does not mean he can come straight across from Serie A into the PL and expect to be flash Harry.

Thankfully at last it looks like Poch is finally getting his message across: Remember this is the PL, it's tough, it's intense, it's fiercely competitive. Don't try to run before you can walk. Press hard, work for the team, do the simple things well first, then once you've got that sorted you can start to show us what you're really made of.

Hopefully the Arsenal game showed he's starting to learn, at last.

  26. Lloris 8 – Not a greats deal to do but professional and solid.

Walker 7 – Poor for the goal.
    Dier 8 – Very good.
    Vertonghen 8 – Solid.
Rose 8 – Got away with a nasty one on Giroud but excellent going forward.

Mason 7 – Won the midfield battle.
    Bentaleb 8 – See above.
    Dembele 7 – Much improved.
Lamela 6 – Worked hard but still see a lack of end product. I'm willing to be patient but needs to do more to justify place in the side besides working hard.
Eriksen 6 – Quiet by his standards. Just Ok despite hard work as above for Lamela.

Kane 9 – What else is there to say?! Superb header and never stopped running.

  27. braineclipse

What did Walker do wrong for the goal?

I would place most of the blame for the goal on Rose for losing his man and Vertonghen (maybe a little harshly) for getting dragged across. We were always going to be a man short after that.

You mean for pushing up? IIRC Vertonghen pushes high up to try to win the ball, fails and then we're scrambling a bit.

Rose fails to anticipate the dink and run and gets done a bit too easy.

Dier comes across and out of his zone without actually getting close enough to stop the cross.

Meanwhile Mason (I think) doesn't manage to track Giroud through the middle.

That leaves Walker with two players in the box and a cross coming in. I can see spreading some blame across all of Verts, Rose, Dier and Mason. But I really struggle to see how Walker was to blame.

You are right and I agree.

The pressing game that we are playing is a high risk strategy. If we push players forward we will get caught on the break occasionally and it was Arsenal's game plan to do this.

  30. Exactly this…

Mason was goalside of Giroud but didnt react as quickly as him. When he (Grioud) was a couple of foot in front, Mason started sprinting but it was too late. Walker notices Mason is not getting back, you can see him turn his head twice as Welbeck is going down the wing, Walker moves across to help with the immedaite danger (Giroud) leaving Ozil.

I've re-watched the game now – I was at the match so always good to see it again from the TV perspective.

First not entirely related comment – HOW F***ING GOOD WERE WE??? Oh wow. I thought this obviously at the time but even more now I've seen it again. We absolutely dominated from start to finish, every aspect of our game was top drawer. And the noise from us Yids was incredible – a WALL OF SOUND. The Scum just melted away in the face of Poch's THFC and our support.

Back to Lamela. I think my 8.5/score for his 'on the ball' contributions, was maybe a bit high. He did get caught on it a few times too. Occasionally this was due to not seeing an option and Scum recovering to get him, occasionally it was due to Lamela's dawdling on it.

I think that, overall, his on the ball contribution was more of a 50-50 good/bad split than I thought while watching the game. But I was swayed towards a higher rating by the rest of what I saw: prodigious work rate and 3/4 excellent challenges/interceptions followed by good runs and one-two exchanges. He looked to me like a player utterly possessed in terms of his dedication. And as I say his fight on more than one occasion 'lifted' the crowd.

I understand what you're saying about the fee – but I'm just IGNORING his fee when I am assessing Erik Lamela. Again as you fairly say, if (and I believe it is 'when') he adds the goals to his game he will really take off. He is a dangerous player already – gets into good positions, just like he did on Sat – and he just has 'something' about him for me.

If I was rerating this match, I'd give Lamela an 8. I'd also give Mason a 9. (I gave him 8.5). Mason was all over the pitch. Covered every blade of grass and a complete, intelligent, committed CM performance. Loved Whinger's moaning about 'what he got away with' apparently. Shut up Whinger – you're just upset as Mason (& Bentaleb) bent your CMs over and gave them a good rogering.

How was he bad in the first half?

I thought Mason had a poor first 20/25 minutes too. his passing was off and his tackling was reckless. I commented in the OMT that maybe the occasion of the NLD seemed to be overwhelming him. He was also slow to react to cover Giroud when Arsnl broke away for their goal. Nothing wrong with his energy though and I am glad he settled down and performed much better thereafter to become one of our heroes.
